Mazzer Mini E 64mm burrs - small Super Jolly?

Firstly, I know there are better grinders for the money but anyone who’s seen my posts knows from my repeated rambles that I have a soft spot for Mazzer grinders.

Long story short, I need a shorter grinder (or a new kitchen… so this is the cheaper option) as even with the small hopper the SJ isn’t going to go under wall units.

I notice the Mazzer Mini E has 64mm burrs, and a 1400rpm motor. I always thought the Mini had 58 burrs but I guess the ‘E’ is different.

Does that mean the Mini E is going to perform the same as a Super Jolly? I love the grind and speed of a SJ, so if I can replicate that in a smaller package that’s ideal.

I had a Mazzer mini E,I found the standard burr’s rather slow..

I changed them for M / SJ burr’s, good quality grind and much quicker.

Elcarajillo I have changed the standard 189D burrs in my Mazzer Mini E to the new Mazzer 233M burrs. The resulting speed increase is not so important for me. But I am pleasantly surprised by the better tasting espressos I get after this burr change.

I’ve got SSP burrs in the SJ currently so could just transfer those across. It would be a reluctant purchase as I’m really happy with the Super Jolly… perhaps I should just saw a few inches off the bottom instead…

Not the equivalent to an SJ due to the motor, so I hear.

There has been considerable discussion on this subject over time ref sufficient power.

I did take the precaution of asking M/zer technical about the power, their response was that they would not recommend it for commercial use (coffee shop) but would not be a problem for ‘home use’

Like you I’m a Mazzer burr fan. Got three grinders with Mazzers - all conical.

Just to say that I notice quite a difference between the Kony burrs (e.g. Niche Zero) and the Robur burrs. The former being (IMHO) more suited to darker roasts and milk coffees and the latter bring out more origin flavors in Medium roasts.

I don’t have any experience in Mazzer flats but I assume there is also variations of those?

tompoland definitely, I’ve only had a Mini (58 flat) and a Super Jolly (64 flat) but the SJ burrs are incredibly good, I’m actually not totally decided on whether I prefer the output of those to the SSP.

There’s the Lux D too (61mm flat) but even by my standards, nearly £1k for a small Super Jolly with a La Marzocco badge on is a bit rich.

Thanks for the replies, I think making the kitchen work for the SJ is a more appealing option than changing the grinder.

I’m in a similar situation. My cabinets have a 16.5inch lip and so the super jolly only slides under with the hopper off. Underneath there is an extra inch of clearance and that makes it possible to single dose with the levercraft dosing bellows or the Weber tumbler. But it is an awkward workflow and I’d like something smaller.

I’ve been considering the Mini and from everything I’ve read it is a solid grinder. The advice all seems to be to replace the stock burrs with either the super jolly burrs or SSP. I haven’t been quite able to make the purchase yet because I’m otherwise happy with the SJ- but something smaller would make life easier.

Glad to hear there’s another SJ fan. I agree it’s a shame to have trade down for the sake of height. I almost bought a Lux D but couldn’t justify the cost for a lesser quality grinder (especially considering my SJ cost around half of it including customisations) in the end I just rearranged things.

It’s my boiler that’s the issue, even with a tamper in place of a hopper it won’t fit under. A lot of these Victorian houses have the boiler in the Kitchen. I just retired the MoccaMaster which was next to it to give me more space and just use a V60 for filter now.

I had a Mini and it was brilliant, but now I’m used to the Super Jolly and it’s speed over the Mini I don’t think I’d go back.

I saw someone somewhere cut the lower case off therefore shortening it. There actually isn’t a lot inside below the motor other than wiring so I’m guessing the only reason for the height is stability.

I’ve not actually tried it but I can’t see why it wouldn’t be possible. Saw a couple inches off and rout the bottom to refit a baseplate.

Edit: struggling to find where I saw this. Maybe I imagined it!

I’m tempted by those 233M burrs, where did you source them?

I’ve been using the 33M ‘old’ SJ burrs and very pleased with the results but keen to see how the newer ones compare.

I’m wary of buying ‘Mazzer’ burrs online as I’ve inadvertently purchased burrs that are Mazzer fit but not Mazzer branded.

Ernie1 I can not comment on 33M burrs because I never had 33M burrs.

As you can see at the bottom of the article page this text is written: “Mazzer code: FMA00233M/QQQ”.

And the burrs I received from this shop also have the text “MAZZER 0233M” printed exactly as the picture on the MAZZER.COM product page of 233M burrs.

Maybe before ordering it is better to confirm with the shop.

I think Mazzer did produce a mini with sub 64mm burrs. It might be a specific model. Their web pages might help if these are still around. I weigh in on my E with a weight over the beans. The old way - rubber lens hood for a puffer. The weight stops flying grinds ending up in that as well as on the worktop.

:) Retention. My son was using it and noted that output was 0.1g low. Told him to brush over the burrs and spin up again. That got it out. That’s what I do when using it.

I went for the E to get the funnel. The stand on that also can be used to get a nice central heap. I added a couple of small stick on buffers to set the portafilter position rather than use the screw.

Looking on their web site it looks like the doser version still is 58mm
