The “Safety System”, is probably not the best name. The lever will move rapidly to a position where it meets hydraulic back pressure.. This can be a long way if the chamber is empty…e.g. the machine is off.
However for different positions of the lever it will rapidly move by different amounts. To keep[ it simple here is my take on things. Viewed from the side..Lever movement is shown by the blue arrow. If accidentally released:
- In the yellow sector, it will flip back rapidly but shouldn’t hurt you
- In the red sector, it will move back rapidly and could hurt you
- in the green sector, protection will kick in and minimise injury
Of course during the shot, it helps a lot to not only protect you, but also the machine should the portafilter blow off. drip tray might dent, cup smash etc..but we are considering only the lever here.
