Finally, the time has come for me as well. The machine arrived on Friday, and I couldn’t be more excited.
Along with some images, I would like to share my first impressions…
Let’s start from the beginning. It took quite a while for the machine to arrive, as I mentioned before. However, this was mainly due to delivery issues with certain components, which future buyers will likely encounter less frequently.
The customer service is exceptional and unparalleled. There was always someone available to listen, and every customer request was taken seriously. As a customer, you feel valued, and the emphasis on service is truly commendable. You can truly notice the difference compared to larger manufacturers. If it weren’t for the delivery problems, this would easily be a 12/10 rating.
As many of you already know, the machine is delivered in a huge wooden crate. Therefore, anyone who is genuinely interested in buying one should seek some support and additional hands during the installation process. It is necessary! especially considering the machine weighs nearly 60 kg.
Now, my first impression….simply wow! The machine exudes an incredibly high-quality feel and looks absolutely stunning from a design perspective. Please note that I may be slightly biased here. :P
Regarding the craftsmanship, there are some small negative aspects to mention. During transport, one of the four metal pieces that secure the drip tray unfortunately broke. It appears to be hand-welded, which either wasn’t properly done or, way more likely, the stress from transportation was a bit too much for the material. I did inform ACS about it, but I will personally seek a solution and have a friend weld it back together.
Another point that comes to mind is the removal of the protective film. It is relatively easy to remove on almost all parts except for one. The film beneath the light is incredibly difficult to remove as it gets caught between the light and the machine’s casing. I had to use alcohol and tweezers, which resulted in a few tiny scratches on the casing. Fortunately, I am not bothered by these kind of things, but I can imagine it being quite frustrating for others.
Moreover, there are some sharper edges and corners on the drip tray and the lid/aluminum covering above the water tank, which I did not expect for a machine in this price range. It doesn’t pose a serious risk or feel inferior quality wise, but I just didn’t expect it.
Of course, all of this is nitpicking at the highest level, but I believe it is justified when dealing with a such a machine.
As for the most important aspect, the taste in the cup, I can only provide limited feedback. Unfortunately, I have had only one day with the machine, and now I am away from home due to work for a while. Perfect timing… This means I have yet to make a perfect cup of coffee, but I do not blame the machine for that. Like with any new equipment, it takes a little time to become familiar and truly master it.
By the way, the vibration pump is very quiet. I suspect someone else will beat me to it with a video of a shot. If not, I will share one in a few weeks.
Regarding the operation, I am generally very satisfied. So far, I find the function of automatically ending the shot to be wonderful, and overall, the machine is easy to use. At this stage, there are two minor drawbacks: the display’s sometimes less responsive nature and the process of emptying the drip tray, which is not very user friendly.
Lastly, something very subjective that I believe resonates with all fellow manual lever enthusiasts. The feeling of making an espresso with this machine is out of this world. I cannot put it into words, but there is something truly special about operating the lever. I guess this is true for all levers, but compared to the Zacconi (direct lever without spring), the feeling with the Vostok is quite special.
I don’t want to jump to conclusions just yet, but based on my very very biased initial experience I am absolutely satisfied. It shows great potential for delivering exceptional coffee and despite the minor issues I mentioned earlier, the overall build quality and attention to detail are impressive.
I will get back with an update in a few weeks at the latest.
