If your puck are “sloppy wet” you need more coffee in there. increase by .2g increments until you are happy.

I dont get the faff aspect of the puck screen

I use it only to reduce the dose. 1.3g approx to the 1.7 screen in the 32 basket. I wish there was a 29mm basket!!

One light tap on the knock drawer bar drops the puck screen a second knock removed the puck

Put the screen on the drip tray and wash for a few seconds , turn it over and repeat…. Spotless. Note I’m talking about a cintered puck screen which washes off instantly.

Interesting to hear the way it is designed to work.

Let’s look at it from practical / theoretical angle. While I understand and appreciate the intent, the design, time and resources which have been invested, what are the odds some one will accidentally knock of the portafilter vs the lever slipping out of hand? 😊

There are no right or wrong answers to this theoretical doubt!

If this can be designed for the use case which is described here, IMHO, perhaps, the ACS want took at the other use case as well. My brain isn’t technical and will never be.

So, theres an “ If ”!!

If the lever slips out of the hand and the new flush lever is in use (pump on during lowering the lever) AND therefore the system is full of water AND you let it slip when near the bottom of travel, then the safety side will work .

If works simply be creating a damping effect due to the single hole but needs the water to create the damping.

I personally dont want the insurance the safety system provides.

But, I do prefer the blind sleeve and it’s shower screen therefore i have 4 x holes (1mm diameter) which i prefer as theres no restriction on fill rate and no drilling but therefore also no “safety” aspect. Still would be slower than the original open sleeve but wouldn’t want it hitting my jaw!!

The maximum impact / risk is when the chamber is not of full of water - when the lever is being locked and it slips out of hand. The chamber is empty or not full. This safety feature wont work, right? If yes, it is worth researching into the design.

The “Safety System”, is probably not the best name. The lever will move rapidly to a position where it meets hydraulic back pressure.. This can be a long way if the chamber is empty…e.g. the machine is off.

However for different positions of the lever it will rapidly move by different amounts. To keep[ it simple here is my take on things. Viewed from the side..Lever movement is shown by the blue arrow. If accidentally released:

In the yellow sector, it will flip back rapidly but shouldn’t hurt you
In the red sector, it will move back rapidly and could hurt you
in the green sector, protection will kick in and minimise injury

Of course during the shot, it helps a lot to not only protect you, but also the machine should the portafilter blow off. drip tray might dent, cup smash etc..but we are considering only the lever here.

sergiu With the preinfusion set at 3 bars, I get 30g in ~14s. If I set it to 6bars, I get 30g in ~8.5s

I think we may be talking about different measurements . Sounds very low flow.

Im back home now and just checked….

250g in 10 seconds.

Since I last posted the measurements I replaced the safety sleeve with the regular one and then put the safety sleeve back in because even though I end up with quite a bit of channeling due to the “irregular water flow”, when the extraction is not messed up, I seem to like the taste more than with the open sleeve…

Anyhow I measured it again with 3bars and 6 bars preinfussion; and I now get around 65grams in 10s respectively 120grams with 6bars.. also now with 6bars the pump is no longer pulsing but runs continuously… but to be honest I installed it the same way back in so not sure why this difference.

sergiu Make the videos again this time don’t film the shower screen and be so close, pull back a bit, capture the group, pressure gauge and part of the lever so we can clearly see and hear what’s going on..I assume the safety sleeve is installed??

I don’t think there is anything wrong with your machine at all.

P.S. If you have the flush lever, do a video using that as well.

I already use a puck screen identical with yours, 1.7mm thickness, but I still end up with a bit of channeling more frequently than when using the open sleeve while not doing anything different in terms of puck prep…

DavecUK I got my 2 extra puck screens bargain at just over £6,

I picked this one up to try.

Im a sucker for an amazon warehouse “used” bargain!!

To be fair, this, apart from the logo is absolutely indestructible to the one from acs.

I wonder how many factories are making the 1.7mm cintered sheets?

sergiu use only around 1.8 or 2 bar for preinfusion and get a few more of those screens. I have 3 now, for warm in the portafilter, one on the bottom of a puck tapped out onto a sponge…it falls off when the puck is completely dry and I wash it after the next shot and put it in the portafilter.

Makes life much easier.

So since changing tampers and therefore baskets im finding my puck screen doesn’t come away every time on my first tap . this is im assuming due to the acs basket being ridged and the ims ridgeless, the acs tending to grab the puck and allowing the screen to drop free.

Not a big deal and still allows a quick clean and reuse of the puck screen .

But another plus for the standard ACS basket and 54.4 tamper 😎
