I took the adjust ring/hopper off as per Daves video, to clean and calibrate Now the ring won't sit to the case. When it tightens there's a gap around 4mm. Threads are ok, no damage. you never need to calibrate again once it's calibrated. Just check you have not cross threaded it.

Not cross threaded. Just did the initial check and calibration. That's when I noticed the gap but it seems they are all like that from what I can tell by Google images

When I look at mine, I don’t see that metal flange. You might wish to carefully remove all, following DaveC’s video (frame by frame) and then (following his video, frame by frame) re-assemble. @"Penance"#p31960 - I’d suggest you do something similar to what’s been suggested above. I’d take the springs, sweeper, the burrs and collar out again, and make sure you put the sweeper the right way up (solid face facing you). Without putting the burrs in, nor the springs, put the collar back and screw it in, carefully not to cross thread it. Is it moving freely? Does it look right? If so, remove the collar, and proceed with putting the lower burr in, the locking pin, the sprigs and the top burr carrier. Screw the collar back in, careful not to cross thread as this time the springs will push back. Does it look better? If you are still stuck, happy to talk you through it after work. 👍 - let me know and I’ll PM you.

I followed the video before first use. I will try again after work and see if i can find any issue.

This is inside the Mazzer funnel after grinding just now, so there’s obviously static. It’s not a zero retention grinder of course but shows that static is inherently an issue to some degree.

My Dad has the Mahlkönig x54 which has a similar chute to the Niche. He also gets some static after about a year of use, especially with filter grinds.

What’s the room temperature in the room where your Niche is? Cold = dry air = static. Warm = more moisture in air = less static. Static is usually worse by default at this time of year.

Static seems to be really bad just now, much worse than usual. I’m blaming the cold and friction from multiple layers of clothing to keep warm

MediumRoastSteam That’s definitely an issue as the temps get colder. A humidifier goes a long way towards making static issues better. I get a reminder of this nearly every year when I forget to turn on the humidifier unit in our heating system. It’s remarkable how much better the house feels when the humidifier is on, and that goes beyond the coffee grinding issue.

Most Queenslanders would literally have never seen nor heard of a humidifier, only dehumidifiers 😀.

3 hours into my Niche ownership and I have a couple of questions.

Static - I think I read that they now say light RDT is ok? The static is not unbearable, but a lot more than I am used to. @DavecUK do you remember how much you put through this grinder? ie would I expect this to get better with another kg or 2?

Grind setting - I was getting gushers until I ground at 0. Doing 15g/30g shots I got these timings

20-10sec
10-14sec
5-16sec
0-47sec

I followed Dave’s video to clean (not that it needed it) and understand how to calibrate it. Using finger and thumb to move the metal collar clockwise, then did the black ring. It was finger tight, so dont think I over tightened it.

It has the flow control disk fitted so it was hard to hold the burrs when I tightened the central bolt. Could I have not tightened that enough so the top burr is floating a bit too much? Or would that have been addressed in the calibration?

With the above timings I am sure I will be able to dial in around 2-3 but that doesn’t give me much room to go finer, and just wondering what I have done wrong.

simonc You are no where near the touching point at 2-3, so don’t worry about it. “Calibration” is a very rough and ready method of pushing the burrs together, to get a really rough zero point….which if you think about it is right past the right rear hinge….then turning the collar back around 20 marks so the indicator is at zero. If it makes you feel better set the grind indicator ring at 8- 10 marks coarser than where you are now. 1 whole mark is about 4-6 seconds on/off the pour. So 2 or 3 should give you the right shot times

you are a looong way from burr touching.

If the coffee is ground really fine (sometimes you have to do that if it’s old), or with certain coffees, you will get more static. I use a wooden chopstick and run it around the inside of the grind cup in a circular motion, pressung up against the edge, this kills all the static. I wouldn’t recommend RDT personally.

P.S. The chopstick is also useful to stick into the hole and down into the burrs to lock them when tightening the top bolt…instead of your finger. Wooden ones strongly recommended…I would have given you one of mine had I thought about it.

simonc RDT is ok?

RDT is fine, not just light. New grinders throw off a lot of static at the start, it will settle down after a couple of kilos have gone through it. Rough rule of thumb: 200g to start seasoning, 2kg to get it 80% seasoned and 10kg for 100%. I’d run 200g through it right off the bat and then just be prepared to adjust the grind dial as it becomes more seasoned. It’s a terrific grinder and so easy to adjust with accuracy.

DavecUK that’s it. 2 months out of practise and I had forgotten about roast date.

It’s a decaf Colombian from Workshop bought from Giro who are normally very good with their roast dates as they have a fast turnover but clearly not for decaf. Bought last week but roasted 2nd Feb.

The Ehtiopian I have tried this morning choked the Minima at 5, so will start going coarser from 10 and see where that gets me but seems to be a more standard range.

tompoland cheers. I got the grinder from Dave so there has been some beans through it already and hopefully it will improve quickly. Having to rdt means I can’t weigh beans into it’s dosing cup which slightly complicated the workflow which I’d like to stop

simonc As a guide 1 mark on the zero is +/- 4 seconds on/off the pour. So 5 marks equates to 20 seconds shorter. This only holds true within a 3 mark range though….not at extremes (because if it’s say, choking, you don’t know by how much).

20 days later and 1kg of beans through it, on top of whatever Dave tested with and all static is gone on my usual light/medium roasts. There was a touch on a dark oily supermarket bean for my father-in-law but nothing that needed wdt.

I haven’t actually gone back to weighing into the dosing cup as not found three need to check the output anymore but nice that the static has gone so quickly.
