Not right this very second, but I'm listening to a lot of TOOL and Pusifer recently. My stereo is currently in storage, so SONOS or phone mainly unless I'm in the car.

Apple music’s today’s hits and recent releases are my typical go to play lists. The last recent release album I listened was 30 by Adele. Elvis’s and Beatles are my all time favourites.

I like all music, the problem is after autotune became increasingly prevalent after the mid 90s, I found myself listening to les and less…I couldn't initially work out why, then I discovered autotune and then Melodyne, There has been pitch correction for a very long time, right back to the tape and splice days with multiple takes…this isn 't a problem. Autotune is a massive problem as is hand dragged pure digital pitch correction. It changes the voice, looses all human character, and they all sound like singing Kazoos. If it isn't autotuned…I'll listen to it, I'm pragmatic. Just the same as when I go to buy a pair of Trainers, or shoes…I don't ask to look at various styles…I ask the shop assistant, what trainers have you got in size 12…they give me a puzzled look as if im an idiot, but come back with 2 or 3 pairs of trainers, which are the only 3 styles in size 12. What's getting really irritating is the production companies, in their "wisdom", have gone back and autotuned Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Simon and garfunkle etc.. to make it "better". I'm quite passionate about the companies stopping using it….as they are robbing generations of appreciating how voices can, and should sound. This week I've mainly been listening to Leonard Cohen - Song's of Love and Hate, Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanangan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas and Amy Winehouse At The BBC - all recent purchases (albeit third copy of the Cohen album!), interspersed with BBC 6 Music. I'm old fashioned, still listen almost entirely on vinyl and still buying it. I'm really interested in music and always have been, dabbled in recording and production for years, not so much now but still interested in it. Still play guitar, electric and acoustic. The discussion on the sound of a lot of modern popular recordings is interesting - it's not to my taste either. It's fashion though - that sound is what is popular now. Production is constantly changing as engineers and musicians use the latest developments available to them - been that way since recording started. That Cher song Believe, was the first big song to use Auto-Tune - and use it in a way that it was not designed to be used. It was initially intended to be a subtle correction tool but she cranked it to 11 for that robot voice sound and started a fashion. My other big gripe with modern music is that it generally lacks dynamics, what people sometimes refer to as the loudness wars. I think this is due to how people consume music now. When I was a teenager, getting your first "separates system" was a right of passage. Hi-Fi was a thing. And you listened to physical albums. Now people listen on streaming services through cheap earbuds or tinny bluetooth speakers. Artists (and record companies) no longer make money on sales, them make them on streamed "listens" - and without an immediate punch and catchy gimmick it's very easy for the listener to simply skip to the next song. So everything gets "louder" to attract attention. Recording even has a new measurement to cater for this need - the LUT, which is basically a measure of loudness. You should add that to your hate list alongside overt use of Auto-Tune. I'm less upset about Melodyne though as it is generally used as a subtle production tool rather than an effect; when used well it should be transparent and can make a good recording of a great voice even better. I do enjoy the imperfections in older recordings though.

Also watched “The Rescue” last weekend which is the true story of the rescue of the 12 young boys and their coach trapped in the caves in Thailand…. What those cave divers did to get those kids out was truly unbelievable

Putting on the list….I remember seeing the breakdown of what happened years ago, but I expect more has come to light over time.

I learnt about it as part of a series of lectures on quality in manufacturing and management.

One of the saddest things was, had they gone at 9am I think it was lift off time on the day when they were originally meant to, they would have been OK. The so called change in weather i.e. rain, that was forecast that stopped them (which by the way wasn’t a concern for other missions taking off in the rain) didn’t actually occur until an hour after their original lift off time, by which time they would have been long gone. But as I say, from then on it was a disaster just waiting to happen. There were two men in particular from NASA who by the way, have absolutely no real regrets about the decisions they made (it’s space flight it’s a risky business) and one man from the company that made the solid rocket boosters who actually seems a haunted man because he acquiesced, when he should have stood by his concerns.

Oh, and one other thing…it was intimated at the end of the programme that the disaster that befell Columbia on re-entry in 2003 was also down to similar reasons..i.e. a design problem NASA management knew about and were just complacent about, coupled with safety regulation deterioration, among a host of other things.

This is actually all to common in industry, possibly even more so today!

For hidden gems I’d recommend a couple - Severance on Apple TV and Mr Inbetween on Disney.

My Inbetween is fantastic, low budget aussie gangster prog which focusses more on the characters, its sparsely and brilliantly written, doesn’t last too long (30m eps and 3 seasons) and is the best thing in a sea of drivel on Disney.

Severance is a very cool sci fi on Apple, whereby people are able to totally split their work/life personalities on entering a certain building meaning the 2 sides of their life are unknown to each other. Its very cool, very oddly shot with odd dialogue. First few eps are setting up the mystery and premise so remains to be seen where it goes, but it’s very original.

Space Force on Netflix, bloody funny.

Well it just goes to show how tastes differ. I watched the first 4 episodes of Space Force and didn’t raise a smile let alone a titter. Like in the American version of the Office I just don’t find Steve Carell funny. Got to admit there are a lot of American comedies that just do not do it for me. Having said that, one that I thought was actually very good was The Kaminsky Method with Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.

Just started watching Father Ted again…now that’s funny!

Just watched a video of Joss Stone singing Midnight Train to Georgia….I’d forgotten just what a fantastic singer she is. Got to be one of the best of her generation.

I’ve started cataloguing my records using Discogs. It’s very clever but takes ages to ensure that you are picking the exact release version - some records have well over a hundred versions. Discogs is massive now - more music sold on their marketplace than eBay globally. Because of this you can compare previous actual sale prices to get an idea of value of your own records - in my account I can see the minimum, median and max value from the last 10 sales of each release. I’ve done about a quarter and hope to get it finished by the end of the month.

I guessed the value of my record collection for my home insurance at £20k and don’t think that will be far off - it’s currently giving me estimated values as Min £3,684.25 Med £6,964.27 Max £10,913. Lowest median value so far is £0.87 for Chas & Dave’s Knees Up album. Highest median is £151.97 for Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (but Chas & Dave is much better!) There are a few box sets worth more - David Bowie - [Five Years 1969 - 1973] median value is £885.50. I’ve nothing that will top that.

I’ve seen some weird programmes in my time but I think this one takes the biscuit… but I’m drawn to it like a moth to a flame. It is funny, violent, creepy, uncomfortable and more. It’s on Netflix and is called….HAPPY!

A retired cop who is both an alcoholic and drug abuser. it has child kidnapping, a torturer, a mobster, a twisted children’s entertainer, a nightmare Father Christmas…oh, and a blue cartoon unicorn. And that’s just the first series. The second series starts with exploding nuns!

I have to admit, if Bob Hoskins said reacting to a cartoon rabbit that wasn’t there nearly sent him over the edge, this guy must spend in between series in a loony bin.

Late to the party but I’d also advocate sticking with the US Office.

It needs to be treated as a totally different show than simply ‘the American version of the original’ to be fully enjoyed. Season 1 is definitely an (admittedly poor) attempt to just create American versions and storylines of the characters in the original. There’s a great book about it where they basically admit that it was an awkward, unfunny disaster early on.

Once the storylines of the individual characters start to develop it’s a really enjoyable show and hilariously funny.

I was a total sceptic as I love the original but as a standalone comedy series, it’s one of the best I’ve ever watched.

Just watched episode 4 season 2 where he destroys all the old people and carers in an old people’s home full of Nazis and a guy in prison mutilate himself with a cleaver….all very visceral. No gratuitous violence here…cough!

For All Mankind on Apple TV is worth a watch. It’s a story of the space race between USSR and USA, but imaging if it had all played out differently and the race had continued, bases on the moon etc. It’s a bit soap opera ish but the visual effects are amazing.
