Anyone else find themselves struggle with SAD? I've always struggled in the winter, dark mornings and nights, cold, drizzle, just makes me a little miserable! Im definitely a summer person, always preferred the warmer climates. Coming into work this morning and seeing this on the roasters temperature readings was not my ideal start to a morning! I’m definitely a summer person, all of my activities / pastimes are outdoors things so dark winter days are a bit of a pita. But the magic date is 21st Dec , summer will be on its way once again 😃

As a motorcyclist, icy mornings are a misery as I realise the bike will be staying put for a while. Meanwhile my friend in LA sends me photos of himself in December in a long sleeve t-shirt riding down PCH…

Went out on the bike last night, -3 apparently and yes I felt it. I dont drive so bike all year, probably why I like the summer so mutch.

we have a family bodyshop painting and repairing cars, paints gone up 60%this yr, id say everything else a good 30%

Cuprajake oh jeez, yeahh I totally feel where you’re coming from. Costs of everything has gone up massively. Its getting ever more difficult for all business’ really, Im hoping things start to get better in the new year…thats all we can hope for

Winter marathon training is the worst. The transition to singlet to t-shirt to long sleeve this year was very quick!

I seem to spend a lot of time at work finding out where the companies boiler room is and doing as much work in them as I can!

Del_UK Oh boy I do not envy you there, I feel like mid november I was wandering around in Jeans and Tshirts and in the space of a week its dropped to -4!

CrownandCanvas I’m SAD because of the huge bills, my greens are at 2 - 3C, as is the roaster. Roasting anything becomes cold, expensive in leccy and it all roasts a bit different. Temperatures in the 9 to 18C window is a sweet spot for roasting for me.

CrownandCanvas I used to get it (SAD) when I lived in NZ where we would have 7 month winters and then every 5th year or so we seemed to skip summer completely. I would always finish winter feeling lethargic and struggling for motivation.

Moved to Queensland 19 years ago purely for climate reasons and have never looked back. I mean it’s full of Aussies but apart from that… 😆

tompoland I have a couple friends that lived in Aus and they said the change in climate made huge improvements to their general moods & outlook, I’d probably suffer in places like Norway and Finland!

CoyoteOldMan Not a bad idea at all, I’m pretty sure I have one of those ‘sad lamps’ in a cupboard somewhere at home, definitely worth bringing it down and seeing if it makes any difference!

CrownandCanvas As a fellow sufferer, I have found that a good ‘day-light’ 10,000 lux lamp for 30 minutes or so in the morning really helps. My job is such that I work at a desk, so staying near the light is not an issue; in a roastery it may be harder, but if you have 30 minutes of paperwork in the day, maybe do that first thing?

Here in Canada, we step into the downhill or x-country skis or jump on the snowmobile or play shiny (outdoor hockey). Nothing like a sunny day in the winter. Can’t wait for the snow to fly (well it did, but then it melted 😞).

Vitamin D also helps, If you can’t build up a “goggle tan”.

Reminds me of a friend who’d spent his life in London, terrified of spiders, he moved during lockdown and said ‘I’m really worried about the spiders now I’m moving out to the sticks’.

The ‘sticks’ being St. Albans….

Melbourne would be amazing but just a bit far from family.

West Coast US would be ideal. California or Oregon.

California climate seems to be ‘just right’ 360 days of the year. Year round biking in canyons, forests, mountains and coastal roads!

Ernie1 When we lived in West London we had to remove spider webs once in 12 years. When we moved to the Sussex coast we had to remove them almost weekly to avoid the house turning into a set for the Adams Family! :)

I felt the full effects of the coming winter this morning. Started at 0700, removing some isolators for a solar PV array that had been poorly installed and had burnt out/gotten wet (some clever chap used AC isolators which have a much lower arching tolerance than DC and also ruined the IP rating by drilling a bunch of not used fixing holes). The work needed to be finished before the sun came up as they were the only point of isolation from the panels, which at 0815 would have been in direct sunlight, kicking out 600v.

It was cold, and there were spiders, the worst of both worlds!
