I registered interest and was sent a survey to complete. I looked at the questions and it was so skewed it was almost unbelievable. It was almost impossible to complete without giving 5 stars to something you have never seen, in every department.......so I binned it. Also, their use of English in the write up is decidedly odd!

Whilst I doubt it has a significant effect on the grinder's performance & function, it seems odd to do a grind analysis by a method with no available comparison, even odder that the % figures given don't match the curves in the chart.

This kind of unintelligible ‘data’ is very common in coffee crowd funding (Invergo brewer, ROK grinder). It’s not very reassuring, but the people posting usually don’t understand the concepts they are trying to convey, luckily for the manufacturers, their prospective customers don’t know what they are looking at either. If the burrs work and the grinder is built to reasonable tolerances then it will work normally.

…unlike my Timemore Nano which is only effective as a paper weight.

What the heck is a ‘sensory motor’? The text about the motor is such a silly thing to mention.

The Size distribution part was like they were forced to stick it in to appeal to the prosumer market.

I’m sure the engineering is top notch because the quality looks high, but their marketing and English department needs improvement for sure.

Aside from looking very similar to the Fellow Ode, I’d guess the 064 will perform very similarly too. 064s burrs in contrast look like standard Mazzer/Italmill clones, although the stepped settings could be an issue for dialling in espresso (even though I’m sure there’ll be a workaround eventually). However if you can swap in SSPs and it can handle dense beans at fine settings and slow RPMs, who knows it could be an interesting grinder.

Issue with 078 is that currently you’d be tied into their burrs or maybe the Xeoleo ghost burrs so it’s a shame they didn’t bump the motor size up for the smaller model or go for a more standard burr size for this one.

Yes I have the grinder for more than 1 month now, got it from aliexpress China into Norway.

I have the only model available on the market now and that is the 400w 78mm hybrid burrs for brewing. I had many grinders over the last 6 years : ek43 with 4 type of burrs and 4 carriers aligned, ultra levercraft with ssp 98mm hu, lagom p64 with ssp brew v1, df64 with 64 ssp v1 brew, bentwood c63 and many more (robur,ceado whatever).

The timemore 78 sculptor is a great grinder for brewing, it surpasses easily the traditional burr grinders cause of the burrs and the rotations, and all the chaff and fines are trapped in the long chute I knock it out after each dose, so my brews are chaff free and less fines.

I like it, it’s tiny, fast, reliable, never stalled with the lightest beans JB, TW, SEY etc. The package is premium, same package if not better than lagom p64, with double box, black foam, low retention low noise, it auto-stops after 1 minute.

I would not bother with this grinder (64mm) for espresso.

Hmm, i understood 78s model does grind for espresso with flat burrs. On their web page they also say that. 78s and 64s are mostly for fine grinding like espresso and Turkish. I am confused.

Inspector Sigma lists just the pour over model, although the Timemore specifies 078s for espresso to brews. Not sure Denis tested his’ for espresso.

the adjustments can be made step-less. The grinder at Sigma is not sold cause of missing CE. they wont sell you any but make you wait.

Timemore has time to make the CE before lauching on kickstarter.

My grinder has the hybrid ghost burrs- they are made for brew, developed for more than 1 year. It has the ek43 pre 2015 pre-breakers with multi raws of teeth like ghost burrs but denser so it can grind finer.

The grind is really really uniform, I can grind much finer than ssp 64mp or 98mm. I brew from 5 to 7 on dial on min rpm speed. (12-20g dose). So out of the question is cant grind fine enough for brew.

For espresso as I said I would not bother with this grinder, or the 64mm small motor one. It’s the same as putting ssp burrs to make espresso in an Ode, shit experience for espresso.

The catch cup is too small and narrow and has a lot of play into a 58mm basket, even if you use a dosing ring it still bad, and the grinds wont be distributed nice in the basket so you need a lot of shake/wdt.

There is no space for a portafilter holder and a dosing ring under the chute. And if you run it at low rpm it might clogg and not evacuate the espresso grind, then you have to adjust manually each dose to high rpm, or blow from above (and it’s impossible to blow cause of the top construction).

Dont waste your money if you are into espresso, there are better choices now for that.

I’m looking for an espresso grinder with about a $300 budget in mind. Would you still avoid the 064S at this price point and if so what would you recommend as an alternative purchase?

When you create a grinder you make it for filter or espresso. This means that when you focus on espresso it should have espresso oriented features:

a way to dose the grinds into the portafilter easily- by either a PF fork holder see df64 or lagom p64, or a compatible cup- df64, lagom p64, weber eg1
it should have low retention or a way to blow out the remaining grinds (in our case the grinder has a declumper at the chute- that catches the fines and chaff (when grinding coarse there is more chaff as it wont be cut to small pieces) this declumper will eat 0.2-0.5g of grinds and the smallest particles will glue to it while leaving the grinder so if you knock it into your portafilter dose you will have a nice pile of fines that will disturb your flow
it is really slow with filter 78mm burrs at 800-1000rpm it takes more than 15-18 sec for a 12 g dose, if you are going to install high friction burrs for espresso I guess it will take 40-60 sec for a dose and in that time things get hot inside and ruin your coffee. These grinders/motors are also not rated to be used for a long period of time cause they overheat and by overheating you need to change the grind size.

Overall this is not made for espresso, and dumping a piece of espresso burr inside wont make it espresso. The same thing happened to ODE, if you throw 64mm inside ODE you can grind espresso (ssp 64mp, italmil burrs, gorilla gear) but it doesnt mean the weak 150w motor is rated for that and it takes a long time, and the experience is trash. On the other hand a df64 was made for espresso and it would work better.
