I have recently been made aware of the Kickstarter campaign from Timemore, which will launch soon. What they promise vs the price looks almost too good, and I wanted to ask if people had any experience with their products, especially the 078? I am looking for a grinder upgrade from my sage to use with my Lelit Elizabeth, and upcoming 064s looks interesting to me.

The main benefits for me were price (1/3 of the Acaia Lunar), accuracy and speed (ie no lag). I also like the form factor (sleek, thin). But the adjustment buttons are poorly designed. And Espresso Mode can stall, particularly in slow running shots. It arbitrarily decides that the shot has ended, when it didn’t. Auto-tar also has issues. The standard mode works well. Just be sure to tar every time. So, it handles its basic functions well, but not the additional features. The above may well apply to other Timemore products.

If you are referring to the scale automatically starting the timer when it detects the weight change, I find this pointless because the only time I'm interested in, if any, is from when the pump is activated, not when the coffee hits the cup, so I don't use it (I did try it once when I got my scale and it worked just fine). I'm happy with the scales because they are accurate, fast enough for me, build quality is excellent for the price (in my opinion) buttons always work first time, device is solid, drips are no problem, it's all flat with no nukes and crannies to catch dirt and grime so very easy to keep clean, battery lasts a long time and is rechargeable via USB-C. Just that Timemore could have done some things better. Especially the buttons, which are unduly sensitive and badly placed. And the Espresso mode, which sometimes fails to start weighing or stops weighing inadvertently. The standard mode works just fine. And it would be great if their scale paired with a logging app, as their other scales apparently do. I guess you can’t have everything. Its still a great value. Just not sure I would buy a grinder from them. I guess it boils down to price and (for me): 1) burr quality and alignment, 2) overall build quality, and 3) ease of use. I initially bought a Eureka Mignon Specialita and soon after sold it, to buy my NZ. It was worth every penny I put into the NZ. I now have two (one for City and one for the Cottage). It was a stretch to buy my initial NZ and Lelit E (my wife complained about it for a while), but I am absolutely happy it and glad that I stretched abit. Next up is to replace my cottage Breville DuoPro, with a Lelit E. Or?

@"JHCCoffee"#p39133 yeah I'm surprised they didn't add on a cheap Bluetooth chip for the price that the nanos are selling for, feel like they're missing a trick there. A small change to properly compete with Acaia, Felicita etc. and the higher end coffee scales, plus there's so many apps out there you wouldn't even need to develop your own at this point.

Hopefully someone has an opinion on this but i'm trying to figure out if I should get the timemore 078s…currently have a stock DF64…watched Kyle Roswell's video and was conflicted when he said he thought the 064s was better for milk drinks which I primarily make, but thought the 78 had to be better overall…now wondering if getting SSP burrs for my DF64 would be better than getting the 078s?

You can always sell 078s if you dont like it for the same price and buy SSP's for your df64 later on. I still think it is a bargain for £400.

Had high hope for this but it seems to be a so so grinder at best. So many design issues that were not thought through.

So in the end, niche is still the best option. Sigh

delta76 from a workflow perspective yes. The review suggests that the taste is similar to the duo for espresso and better for filter. For the price, it does a great job.

I’m going to keep an open mind. It shouldn’t be too difficult to sell if I don’t like it.

Emc2 one concern I have with the 78mm grinder is that no one really knows how good or bad he burrs are, or their life span. In the eventuality they need replacing, will they be easy to source?

Emc2 “so so at best” is probably too harsh. it’s a fine grinder and for the price pretty good, but I expected more. They did better than the DF64/DF83 on many things (especially look and feel), but still not “there” yet.

But it looks like gen 2 DF64 is a good improvement on the previous version and now doesn’t need any modding out of the box.

If Niche had sold that grinder with all the glaringly obvious shortfalls and issues, I wonder if the folks out there would be so forgiving? Me, if I buy something and it costs £30 or £300, I expect it to work out of the box. Why on earth have they used the burrs they have? AS far as I know there are no 2 hole 78mm aftermarkets so beloved by many, yet barely a word. Of course, if you bought the promise and signed up you have a grinder for a really keen price when compared to the retail offering, that still has all the issues. One of these days those who like to crowdfund are going to get really burnt.

dfk41 we would never know for sure, one educated bet is that they would still be doing fine but not as successful as they are now. Niche, especially Zero is commonly regarded as the golden standard of single dose grinder.

it depends on how much money you want to pour on marketing and influencers, so they can bend their words to make your shortcomings sound like small issues that not big a deal.

dfk41 - We now wonder why there aren’t so many videos and all the nonsense around the Duo. It’s because it works, and works really really well. And it works really really well because it’s been tested heavily for two years, if not longer, prior to hitting the production line. Personally, I’d rather buy a finished product rather than some form of Beta testing programme pass.

MediumRoastSteam and I think the experience they had with Niche Zero really helped. Scuptors are the first electric grinders from Timemore. they could have done better, but I’d cut them some slack (still won’t buy one until a V2 or V3, if ever)

That’s no excuse. The Zero was the first grinder from Niche.

What I don’t get is that new grinders come and they have bellows, knockers, anti-static dissipators and what nots, and in the case of the Timemore, the burrs mounted vertically.

The Niche Zero, which was released to the general public 5 years ago, didn’t need any of that nonsense. We all know why… Because it was trialed and tested for years before anyone started talking about it (let alone filming it).

I’m my opinion, it’s a mad rush to get something to market, without much thought about workflow, maintenance or usability.

MediumRoastSteam Zero is a rare/happy ending for a kickstarter project, it’s definitely not a norm for a first time product to be that well rounded. as I said, I am not defending Timemore, I am rather disappointed. just want to be fair.

Probably a trait with Chinese companies. User experience and reliability engineering are not their strong suit. DF64 and DF83 are example. And I can see that in other products in my other hobbies as well (audio/3d printers).
