Well, how about that! Niche just released an 83 mm flat burr grinder. Love my conical, but very interesting. They are using two burr sets: one for espresso and one for drip.

I backed the Timemore grinder. The Niche duo is twice the price but perhaps more likely to be reliable. I’m conflicted now…

On the one hand this doesn’t seem weird enough to be an April Fool’s. A Niche with a massive hopper or something would’ve been more of a joke. On the other, for a machine known for it’s great workflow, it seems slightly weird to have to change burrs to switch coffee types as if anyone would actually just casually switch burrs multiple times a day.

Tbh the ‘sold with two burrs’ is the only thing that makes me question this.

But if you want to grind correctly for filter (as in, be more optimised for that method, extract better flavours etc) you are better off with the more appropriate burr set.

Until people see it in action, there’s no point speculating what it can or can’t do. How can you say the motor is powerful enough, or not, if you haven’t seen it working? You are making a lot of comments regarding burr size, geometry and whatever else, without even seen a video of the grinder turned off, let alone on.

Best to wait and see. And then make comments. Drives me mad.

I looked into this, and answered that this information doesn’t seem to be available of the Niche, although it seems to be readily available for the motors in most other grinders on the market. That led to a discussion about the cut out feature of the Niche, and whether the wattage of the motor applies given that feature. The discussion expanded to general principles of spec’ing a motor for any given task, in this case an espresso grinder in general, not the new 83mm Niche in particular.

Same here. Personally, I don’t drink filter coffee, and would have much preferred to choose if I wanted burr A, burr B or both and have a reduction in price.

Saying that, if I end up buying one, curiosity would no doubt get the better of me and I’ll end up drinking filter coffee just because I have the correct burrs! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

In case the burrs jam. I dropped a screw in one once, burrs stopped and it cut out. This protects the motor. It’s also good for compliance.

JHCCoffee really not qualified to comment sorry. Reason is that I’ve never used the Niche for anything other than medium/light or darker. The Kony burrs are great for a strong tasting ristretto or espresso or to punch through milk but something like the Moca SD helps me pick up different flavor notes from the same bean.

An interesting post yesterday on the Decent Diaspora from the very discerning John Buckman. Sounds like he got one at the same time as you Jake (congrats by the way, that’s a helluva coup!).

Nothing to apologise for! All good.

For me, I was happy to understand that a DC motor runs very differently from an AC motor, in the sense that it draws what it needs to draw, as explained by Dave. So for me at least, that was the answer to the question.

And I did read your post and that the information is not readily available for the Niche. :-)

Will also say that most of the Evo shot vids I’ve posted since Nov have been with the duo.

This isn’t meant to sound as harsh as it will typed out I just hope we get genuinely objective reviews and not just heaped praise due to the reputation of the Niche and the relationships behind the scenes.

£499 is affordable for a lot of people and the Niche has been best in its class for a long time, nothing came close. However £700 (a lot more for people outside the UK) is getting into really serious money to spend on a grinder so it needs to genuinely be very very good and live up to all the claims to be worth it in my opinion.

Despite it looking like it does, I’m still genuinely considering it so I am keen to see reviews and opinions.

For me in the US, the Niche Duo is £869 including shipping, or $1070 USD at today’s exchange rates. The DF83 is $700 shipped in the US. So that’s a $370 USD difference in price.

Then again, you all in the UK have the opposite issue. Not sure what the Niche Duo total cost is in the UK with shipping, but my understanding is that the DF83 is the more expensive option in the UK with import fees. So turnabout is fair play, I guess. *grin*
