Well, how about that! Niche just released an 83 mm flat burr grinder. Love my conical, but very interesting. They are using two burr sets: one for espresso and one for drip.

I backed the Timemore grinder. The Niche duo is twice the price but perhaps more likely to be reliable. I’m conflicted now…

On the one hand this doesn’t seem weird enough to be an April Fool’s. A Niche with a massive hopper or something would’ve been more of a joke. On the other, for a machine known for it’s great workflow, it seems slightly weird to have to change burrs to switch coffee types as if anyone would actually just casually switch burrs multiple times a day.

Tbh the ‘sold with two burrs’ is the only thing that makes me question this.

But if you want to grind correctly for filter (as in, be more optimised for that method, extract better flavours etc) you are better off with the more appropriate burr set.

DavecUK the Mazzer 83mm burr sets used. from memory 151B and 151F.

I think they are espresso (151B) and filter burrs (151F) in that order; I reckon they are Mazzer ZM burrs set.

DavecUK IIRC, they advise cleaning the retained coffee, while burrs swapping between filter and espresso.

If one were to swap these daily, we are looking at about 1.4g of wastage a day or about 500g wastage a year. I think this wastage can be avoided / minimised as I am not convinced leaving the retained coffee (0.7g) will make a noticeable difference in the cup. This is for some one like me who would make both espresso and filter daily. The only difference might be a little more fines getting in to V60. That’s a nice trade off, I think.

Any thoughts from experience.

MWJB depends on your answer to my question, which I didnt see in your response. In absence of knowing the year of testing, I’ll take a guess that it was more than 10 years ago in which case there are a multitude of new burr sets since that test was conducted. That would qualify as tangible.

MWJB I’ve done a lot of comparisons and after a few hundred pours I have some general impressions. Always exceptions of course.

But I’m still exploring. 14 different burr sets on the way.

Probably should get this thread back to the Duo.

@Cuprajake had a look above but can’t see any reference to the which of the 151 series the burrs are. Have you had a look on the burrs for their respective numbers? Thanks Jake. I imagine you are quite bust at the moment.

This issue of burr height and the need for shims: is there a reason that burr swapping may be an issue for the Duo as opposed to other grinders like the DF83? Just pondering whether I keep the latter and grab use the Duo for burr swapping. Or maybe I’m better to hang on to the DF83 for burr swaps.

The burrs are mounted to the carriers, changing burrs for say SSP would result in the zero point moving, niche recommendation is to keep the mazzer burrs as that’s what the grinder is built around.

I sold my SSp 3 months into testing, the duo gave a much more balanced cup,withess fines

ah … got it. slow learner here. makes perfect sense. and it sounds like margins are pretty tight with the diameter too so mot all burrs are going to fit like that do with say a DF where there is a large circular gap around the burrs, inside the casing. thanks for the illumination @DavecUK and @Cuprajake

Cuprajake well, a lot of manufacturers say that we do it anyway huh? thing is, is there a serious reason it would not take ssp, like, the burr is too tall or motor can’t handle it?

Waitforme i suppose its a bit hard from a manufacturing point of view, the filter burrs are the mazzer 151F, these cost around £90 to buy from looking online, the issue is what do you charge for the carrier, having looked at the machined aluminium, its worth more than £20, so if they sell the grinder for £700, do they then charge £150-170 for the filter burrs? would that be classed as a rip off? i dunno….see what im getting at. i can understand the considered frustration changing burrs daily, but its 60s out of the routine, the kettle takes longer to boil…

On the ofher hand - a uk sold df83 is 799 though its discounted by 100 as its a preorder… so having 2 sets of quality burrs would be a no brainer - if you were based in the UK.

Outside then the df83 is a cheaper option as there seems to be manys ways to either import at a discount - or there are local importers like bella barista(uk) offering the grinder in the local market.

Lets be honest if the duo had been released with a single set of burrs you could pick at checkout - I very much doubt the price would have moved much at all - their trade/buyin price for the burrs would be vastly different to a consumers retail price.

yeah, we as the uk have wierd pricing vs the rest of the world, but if we want one of the titan grinders we have the import side too, swings and roundabouts i suppose,

ive not really looked at the df83 so unsure what burrs they come with,

Cuprajake that seems to depend where you get it - import direct they now seem to ship with their own made burrs (for v2) but the ones coming into to Bella barista may have the italmils as before. I guess nothing is certain until they physically land here with them.
