And yes, the depth of the scale is such that the front legs sit on drip tray edge but the rear legs sit on the drip tray grill, such that there is a very slight inclination to the scale. So at your suggestion I tested weighing on:
The counter
The wood block they provided, sitting on the drip tray
The drip tray, slightly pulled out, to allow the scale to sit more level
I filled a beaker with 50 ml water (weighing 46g, though it should weigh 50g) and was able to consistently pour and weigh 46g, on the above surfaces. But if I weighed on the drip tray as is, I had varying weights, tending towards 35g.
So, I think the above solves the problem.
I have just strongly suggested that the manufacturer provide much better usage, FAQ and trouble shooting information on their website, so that their customers can avoid these problems. Their instruction manual is very limited/poor.
I will likely withdraw my AliExpress refund request and dispute, once I test the scale on my espresso machine.
