Now heres another tasty cash grab that's been going on for years. **Some 39 years ago, I was actually paying £70 more per annum to insure a 2 bedroom maisonette than I currently pay to insure a 5 bedroom house with Annex..** Recently my home insurance came up for renewal, the premiums had risen a little last year…by about inflation and then this years renewal, a massive 85% rise.. to £266, I phoned to ask why and Direct Line (lets name and shame), who are not on comparison sites, immediately reduced it to £227 as a special discount… To give some context, insurance is buildings (unlimited) and contents (75K), no accidental damage. Contents is effectively everything that falls out if you pick the hose up and shake it. Then the mails from compare the market came in, same insurance cover from tesco…£162. So of course immediately changed to the new company. It made me think though, these companies really reply on inertia and peoples busy lives to rip us off. I looked back at the house insurance here in 2012 and it was over £245! Always get quotes and recheck your deals on any regular service….especially house and car insurance.

Same here. Direct Line car insurance increased my insurance by 100%. So I phoned them up, and asked why, or what changed. They couldn’t work out why. They asked me if I shopped around, and I said no. They blamed the system and offered me a renewal for 20% less than what I was paying before. As you say Dave, they rely on us being “bothered”. I bet a lot of us don’t bother or don’t question, or don’t have the time, so they simply try their luck. Similar story with the AA and Virgin Media.

Yup, mine is now out of contract, it went up by 14%, from 26 per month to 29.69, I've been with Talk Talk ever since they started when it was Tiscali. I had a flyer from Box broadband who are putting in fibre. I get up to 150Mss down and 30 Mbps up. Box offered me a 2 year deal for **300mbs down and up on fibre** for £24.95 per month. It's not here yet (but soon), when it is, I can take up the deal and bye bye Talk Talk. It's a shame companies no longer offer loyalty schemes/perks…but they sure seem to have embraced disloyalty schemes designed to drive their long standing customers away.

That reminds me i need to change my broadband deal, I knew it was going to change in April but the small print for all broadband deals seemed to say they'd increase by CPI+3.9% IIRC so I thought best to change deals after 1st April

After the April increase, I looked on the supplier website and found I could double my speed for the price I was paying BEFORE the increase. So, I now have double the speed for last year's price. Result!

Result! same for me, more than doubling of speed and paying £1 less before the increase and saving me £4.60 per month on my current price. No landline, but I really don't care, I hardly use it now…for some incoming calls, but my mobile reception here is good and I will just move everything to the mobile..

I've never had a landline in my house. I haven't been picky with my broadband in the past, I can only get fibre to the cabinet and I've been with a few providers on basic fibre deals and I've not noticed any difference in speed.

What are you concerned about damaging your house or contents? Serious question. My main concerns on a rural property in Australia are fire and theft. Where we are we will never be flooded. House and contents, to rebuiild our house here would cost at least $600-999k. Contents would cost at least 250k to replace. It is almost impossible to get insurance for my very large shed with hundreds of thousands of dollars of replacement value tools, machines, vehicles etc and don't even think about insuring stud cattle. I donate to the local Country Fire Authority and have a firearm license.

I have kids 🤣 so one of them knocks the TV over I'm screwed

Doram - on Virgin Media they added the nonsense recently so they could update prices out of contract, giving customers the option to real hey we’re not happy.

After a 2 day conversation over a few departments (using WhatsApp chat) I argue with wasn’t fair as I was in a contract. They gave all the rubbish excuses, so I said that, as much as they can do that, so can I, and would then opt to break the contract. In the end they agreed to keep me in the agreed contractual price until the end of the contract which expires in Feb next year.
