6 Months since the Duo landed
Summary:
It just works. Made some nice espresso and some best filters along the way.
Question, which I continue to ask every day!
Did the Duo Filter Burrs play a role in relegating the Evo to week-end job?
Hand on heart, I think it did partially. Because, the quality, consistency and repeatability of the filter were extraordinary. The other reason is swapping the burrs at least 3 times a day on an average wasn’t appealing. There were odd days in the first 4-6 weeks that I could not be asked to swap burrs if I wanted a filter or otherwise. It might still work for some.
Three niggles in 6 months:
First, I see a lot of Fines around the threads. This was excessive when I was swapping the burrs. This has reduced relatively, but this doesn’t impress me as I need to frequently clean and re-grease. I do take a lot of care while brushing off. It is what it is. Molykote 111 and dry silicone spray cause too much friction. They are no good for me.
Second, recently, the hand-tight of the configured hopper for filter used to be below Zero. After 4 weeks, the hand-tight point came to 20, just like that. I brew by Kruve sifting. As a result, 12% fines grind ref at 26 became 37. This doesn’t help in brewing. Cleaning the threads didn’t help. The red knob wasn’t loose. Strange. I have now re-configured the filter burrs again. I hope it is a one-off.
Third, a few months ago, l saw the filter burrs grind setting change its’ position after grinding 30 - 36g for two cups by 0.5 mark, which isn’t much to change the taste. Seems ok now.
Current status
I have two hoppers, each configured for espresso and filter respectively.
I do not see any change in the way the Duo has been used during the last 4-5 month - filter for week days and espresso for the week end.
The Evo is seriously under-utilised during the last 4-5 months. I don’t see this changing.
In closing, I am glad I bought the Duo!
