LMSC Skylark Colombia Wilder Lasso Pink Bourbon Natural

This coffee went down very quickly as a few flat whites and Cartados as we had our daughter came down to see us after a couple of months. My family said the flat white had lots of Raspberries and Champagne / Winey flavour, while Cortado was like drinking (dark) chocolate cake. I am pleased they loved this coffee.

I am going to have to order another bag as I haven’t had a chance to filter / brew even a single cup. 😊

IIRC, you did a good pour over recently using the NZ setting recommended by @MWJB. He is your man for the brews. I don’t use the NZ. Hope you would like their sample pack. Looking forward to your comments on those samples.

Rave Coffee

The flavour, aroma and acidity are lime/lemon from start to finish with a nice herbal edge. Very nice and it also makes a lovely espresso and a rich flat white.

Will definitely brew this on Hybrid Hario and the Aromaboy for sure.

I like this more as an espresso than as a filter. Pulled a lovely cup at 93/99, 7.5 on the Duo and the usual 1:2.5. The cup was very sweet as in berries like strawberries, had a floral finish and a pleasant aroma.

The notes state strawberry pastry which was literally what I was surprised to get as I drank this cup. This is something I didn’t get when I brewed this on The Aromaboy and the Switch.

The extraction monster Evo is doing a fine job here.

I believe this Ethiopian will also make a great flat white.

I only wished it was on the lighter side. 😊

I am considering ordering from skylark or dark woods as I’m yet to try their offerings. It is on the pricey side for me but I’ve been underwhelmed by coffees of late so could do with a good one.

ST30B What do you drink - Black or flat white or both? Darkwoods are good, besides Taith, Skylark, Foundry. Foundry is one of my go to roasters.

I’ve had a subscription for foundry. However I paused it towards the end of last year as I was finding the coffees quite samey so thought I’d give it a break. Hard lines are my only remaining subscription and always seem to hit the spot.

This is one of the best I have had in recent years. Filter is great scoring 9/9. Made a flat white, which was very rich, thick, creamy and was like drinking citrus and tropical fruit cake.

The shot was at 94/100, 1:2.5, 28s and #5 on the Duo.

LMSC I absolutely loved this too! In thought it was amazing as espresso. Thick, creamy and fruity. Amazing body for a lightly-roasted bean. Darkwoods has this exact coffee on offer too, though I preferred the Fika roast. Fika are well worth checking out - great value and some fantastic coffees on offer. They do a personal drop off for those in the Durham area which is cool. Well worth a visit to the roastary if you are in the area - Matt who runs it is a great bloke 👍

dfk41 it is reasonably light, but not near Nordic light. Fika do tend to be on the lighter side.

The colour judged by the beans can be misleading. I wouldn’t call this lightly roasted. Perhaps, medium light.

Not sure if this coffee is still available on Fika, which was cheaper at £16 per 250g. I can’t find it.

Darkwoods still have them.

Jairo Arcila Yeast and Strawberries co-ferment

Complex, muted acidity and plenty of floral and fruity aroma. Strawberries are what come out clearly both as acidity and taste. It has a nice floral aroma (Jasmine, I think) especially at the finish complimented by creamy raspberries (at the finish) as espresso and flat whites. The acidity was muted and I think it will benefit from a higher temperature. I pulled 1:2.5 dosing ~17g at 93C/99C and grinding at #6.5 on the Duo.

I’ve been running the duo filter burrs during the week, got them recently.

The intention was to see how they compared to the Ode Gen2, and whether or not the workflow of changing burrs for Monday to Thursday filter and Friday to Sunday espresso worked for me or not.

Verdict regarding taste. I’d say the Duo is better at separating flavours, noticeably so and are currently my preference over the ode gen2 burrs.

I won’t go into workflow too much as I’m sure it’s been done to death and we will all have personal preference regarding whether burr swapping is worth it or not. I don’t mind doing it weekly as planed, but on a weekend when I’ve got espresso burrs fitted I have defaulted to the Ode or K ultra for an evening v60. As I CBA to swap out for one brew!

Crankhouse El placer Red Fruits CM Honey

Very nice coffee. Full of floral aroma, full bodied, complex texture and strawberries. It has a gentle honey flavour throughout, but can’t fix the little bitterness which is probably booze (Rum is noted on the bag). Not sure, I like the slight bitter finish on the espresso and filter. I can’t fault the coffee as the finish doesn’t suit my taste buds.

It nevertheless makes a great coffee - espresso, flat white and filter (which scored 8/9 as a first brew).

One of the challenges I always face is setting realistic expectation of brewing traditionally processed coffee (natural / washed) after drinking coffee like El Placer, co-ferments or a Thermal Shock. A bias potentially kicks-in in terms of taste, flavour and likability.

This is what happened to Darkwoods’ Colombian Ombligon.

It’s a decent coffee making a great Cortado, and filter scoring an average 7.3/9 so far. It was creamy, and full-bodied but, I could not get a sense of any acidity. I would be happy to drink this as a flat white and Cortado.

In Contrast, Fika’s Edinson Argote SL 28 was excellent. It was bright, creamy and juicy. It was as sweet as Cherry coupled with strawberries acidity and aroma. Haven’t brewed this yet.

Both coffee were pulled at 94C/100C at 1:2.5 ratio on the Evo with a grind size of #5 on the Duo.

While I am still drinking the Darkwoods’ and Fika, I have had a few 36g packs from Taith (Buddhas Hand, Luz Helena Salazar Sweet Nectar and Geisha, Edinson Argote Quebraditas SL28), and TePuy’s Colombian Sudan Rume. They all scored between 7 and 8.

For me, Fika’s Edinson Argote Competition Lot (averaging a steady 8/9 so far), TePuy’s Sudan Rume (average 8/9) and Taith’s Edinson Argote Quebraditas SL28 (8/9) are the standout bags. Great coffee, nice aroma and pleasing sweet notes as described.

IMO, between Fika and Taith, the Taith’s body and texture were a little on the lighter side.

TePuy’s Colombian Sudan Rume was the surprise pack, considering the price £13.5/250g. This (Sudan Rume) coffee is being sold at various price points (£13.50 at TePuy, and £22.00 to £60 for 180g / 200g elsewhere). Please note TePuy is medium roasted.
