Configuring filter for Zero point and optimum upper burrs position
I had aired my thoughts yesterday. I had warm and friendly email exchanges with Niche. I am not going to detail them out.
Theoretically, one can configure the filter, provided it is re-configured when the filter set is swapped for espresso. Practically, it is not possible as I swap burrs twice a day. So, for me or some one who is going to regularly swap burrs, one will have to use the filter burrs without identifying the zero point. There is no point in discussing does it or doesn’t matter.
This gives me two choices:
1) Mark one of the 3 positions (as we discussed earlier) and use that as a starting position for brews. This will give a relative consistency in grind reference on an un-configured filter burrs set.
2) A separate beans hopper for the filter. One might consider it to configure and lock-in the optimum position in terms of zero point and upper burrs position.
The second choice appears OTT. However, the duo offers the best of both worlds. The second choice facilitates that, a lack of which gives the Next Best Choice (NBC), which is choice 1.
I would be curious to test if the choice 2 gives the same grind setting as choice 1. It may or may not. I won’t know unless this is tested. I would be keen to test and put it to rest.
Niche was kind enough to consider choice 2 a few months a later. Until then, it is the NBC time.
