I had long thought of, since getting the Evo, having a dedicated thread to share my coffee experience. The laziness got the better off me. I also didn’t have much recounting the journey stories like experienced folks like Dave, dfk41, Systemic, MRS, Jake and many more. Jake’s recording of his journey is beautiful. With the duo due to be delivered soon, it’s about time I take a leaf out of Jake’s and have a thread sharing the user experience of using the Duo the way it was originally meant to be and designed for. Swapping the burrs seem to be quick and easy. Can one really integrate it as a part of a daily routine? Or, would it become a faff over time - what ever may be the reason ? I make 3 espressos in the morning for 3 and at least a filter or two for self during the day. There may or may be any decaf espressos in the evening. I think users like self are perfect candidates for the duo. I have every intentions of swapping the burrs - there is no reason not to otherwise. It remains to be seen if I will enjoy using the dual burrs daily or get bored swapping daily after the honeymoon period - 3 months! I will post my views as I experience it. There will not be any reviews or comparisons for three reasons. 1) I can’t be asked, 2) Tom, I am sure, will do the honours as usual and 3) I can’t afford to buy :-) I do want to know how I will like the espresso (taste wise) from JX pro vs the duo. I mostly drink medium light / light. I take full 2 mins to grind 17g. One thing for sure is I won’t be missing the hand-grinding part! 😁 More later!

cant wait for you to get hands on, its about time they hit the hands of more real world users, im sure you will love the grinder, im finding 6 to be a good starting point with beans for espresso and then 30-40 range with filter, which i dont drink alot of tbh,

I think Niche suggest this, but if you can, once unboxed, leave it to come to room temp which takes an hour or so. If you touch it, it will be freezing cold which is just a by product of the delivery system……enjoy matey!

You will find that while waiting for the kettle to boil, you can swap the burrs, why not to get extra good filter as opposed to just using the espresso burrs.

With the Vostok coming in a couple days I decided to do a test run in the duo with espresso burrs on an espresso grind setting. The coffee was a stale over roasted breakfast coffee. Equal parts of milk and drip coffee were not enough to cover up the flavour notes of stale ashtray. Blech.

Well the duo didn’t like it either. It choked at any settling <10. Had to go up to 30 to get it to start grinding again, and then I could adjust it back down to 10.

Lesson learned. I washed the burrs to remove any contamination.

Yes. Soapy water and brush. Rinse with water. Dried immediately.

Your comment got me thinking. I have never cleaned my Fellow Ode in the two years that I owned it. So I just disassembled it to look at it. The burrs are relatively clean with a few spots that needed attention (large coffee grounds stuck in groove blocking channel). I used my fingernail to pop out the stuck grounds, and wiped the burrs with a paper towel before reassembling. No soap, no water. Maybe next time.

I would imagine quite rapidly…the first thing I would want to do after drying would be grind a double dose of coffee…probably twice. The problem with something like Isopropyl alcohol is it’s a non polar solvent and doesn’t clean coffee residues as effectively as a polar solvent like water.

But for me 99.9% Isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush would be my preferred methiod, then grind a dose to get some oils back on the burrs (atmospheric moisture barrier). Which reminds me…I need to buy a bottle.

My son washed his burrs once.

He was meaning to fill up the espresso machines water reservoir but poured the water down the grinder instead. That’s the trouble with doing things before you’re caffeinated.

Clean burrs? You betcha.

Dead grinder? Yep.

You gotta be kidding, if you ever see mark making brewed…it’s a pretty exacting process, with everything recorded and often analysed!!

My burrs get cleaned every week, as I swap between espresso and filter. This brings 2 clarifications:

1) How often do you clean with 99.9% alcohol?
2) I assume you dump the coffee that was ground after cleaning with alcohol?

I never clean my burrs! I like oil residue. It has several functions!

Darkwoods Coffee - Colombia El Placer Purple Fruits.

@Systemic - It was great like filter. Jasmine, Honey and complexity of the coffee come out very well from start to finish. It was very smooth and sweet. I enjoyed drinking it as an Americano. I have got to state that the flavour profile in filter is a class apart as your “Jasmine on steriods” is just an elevated Jasmine flavour as espresso (as Americano). It was one of the best cups I have had so far.

Ground at 5.5 on the Duo, 93C on the group, 99C the boiler, 1:2.5 and 54s. I would put up the temperature by 1C and ground coarser may be at 6.5 on the Duo, if I were to pull another shot.

I won’t make a flat white with it. I think I will save the remaining 50+g for filter as I don’t want to miss making some more filter with it.

Has anyone tried the SSP Cast burrs in the Duo?

I’m experiencing something with them that I didn’t have with either the SSP Espresso (HU) or the SSP Brew (MP) burrs which is that they appear to be grinding the same size regardless of changing the dial.

I’ve checked the centre bolt and it’s tightened as it should be.

The pic of the log uploaded shows a pour time for my Hario Switch recipe varying by only 2 seconds despite the dial being set between 23 and 33. I don’t seem to be able to adjust so that the grounds are coarser.

Any and all ideas will be gratefully considered.

While I can’t help you with your SSP cast burrs, I think the 2s difference is ok, IMO. The below is the average brew time for two different grind sizes on my filter burrs configured Duo.

Average 03:35:09 (9% #37) 03:38:42 (12% #26)
Std Dev 00:19:53 (9% #37) 00:21:59 (12% #26)

Mine is about 3:33s difference. If you have a Kruve set, you may sift your coffee for 2 mins each and see if you are getting two different percentage of fines or about the same. You would be looking at the whole number difference than decimals.

Not had the cast, these the lab sweets? If so I’ve heard mixed views and people struggling.

Sure they needed alot of seasoning (from memory)

Cuprajake cast is sometines referred to as lab sweet, after the dittings I guess.

SSP recommend 3kg seasoning and these had 2kg.

LMSC I can check them with the Kruve so thanks for the reminder. The difference in grind size / pour time with the 151F burrs is quite dramatic across the same dial range but yes, different burr set.

In the meantime, if anyone has use the cast burrs in the Duo, I’m keen to hear from you!
