Our go-to beans from our local roaster is a blend that is a little darker than medium roast. Last time we had to get a new bag, they were out of our usual, so we tried a new single origin bean from Guatemala that they had, which is also a little darker than medium roast.
I have a DF83 grinder. After dialing in my grinder settings for the new bag, the espresso we’re getting is great. But what I noticed is that this batch of beans seems to be more sensitive to grinder adjustments than I’m used to with our usual beans.
To put some numbers on it, moving the DF83 grinder adjustment by one tick with our usual beans usually results in a change in extraction time by about 4s (all other things being equal). With the new beans, the same adjustment seems to result in an extraction time of about 8s, double what I’m used to.
Has anyone else ever experienced this sort of thing with different beans?
