I had no intention of buying any more grinders, but the current Amazon price drop to £159 was too tempting to resist.

First impressions are the lid for the catch cup seems to make a messy grinder even messier. I have removed mine for now.

The grinder is positioned at the edge of the worktop, with a bag under it, so I can sweep the stray grinds straight into it. (If you can spring for the gen 2 the improved cleanliness is undoubtedly worth it.)

Using the grinds knocker is essential as not doing so deems to leave at least a gram in the chute.

It grinds finer than I was led to believe. At setting ‘4’ (burrs touch at 2) the grind was finer than my coarser setting for 1 cup pour overs.

Fast grind.

That’s a great price for a great grinder!

To be honest I’ve had the v2 since launch and I’m not sure it’s really much cleaner than the first. I’ve also removed the lid from the cup, seems superfluous and when I asked Nick at Fellow he said many people do remove it.

I typically see 0-0.1g retention now after a few months of daily use.

The speed is indeed brilliant, it’ll do 32g in about six seconds and any time saved for that first brew of the day is welcome!

That’s a little surprising to hear, I would have hoped for a clear difference in the mess levels, given all the work Fellow have put into the Gen 2.

With 4 knocks on the Ode, it seems just a little messier than my Wilfa flat (no knocking/bellows/RDT etc.).

Oh well, they have moved on and subsequently there are bargains to be had.

Today’s V60 was a bit fine ( setting 3.33) compared to previous brews with this method at my medium V60/pour over grind setting (about as fine as I like to go with a gooseneck).

A very good price for a nice looking and well capable grinder. I found RDT made it far far cleaner and reduced retention, I’d guess the grounds cup lid also helps in that respect by reducing them spraying out of the cup.

It’s a bit hit and miss. Hugely dependent on bean/roast type and atmospheric static it seems. The issue is the ionizer they’ve built-in is two small flat pins in a recess to the side of the chute. They work fantastically well initially but then get clogged within a few uses which renders them completely ineffective. Given that Fellow seem to know what they’re doing design-wise I’m guessing this was unavoidable.

Keeping the ionizer clean definitely helps but it’s a choice between either cleaning the ionizer every few days or just ignoring the mess and cleaning the whole thing once a week. I now opt for the latter.

I tend to hover around setting 4 for V60, and 7 for the Moccamaster for med-dark coffee.

So we have a ode 1.1 at the roastery now and it is way messier than the gen 2. I will have to put them sided by side but the difference is noticeable. For v60 the gen 2 doesn’t need cleaned all that much in the environment I have it but for bigger batch brews the ioniser does need cleaning more.

I think the 1.1 could definitely benefit from maybe a light rdt to minimize the mess

I’ve done 20 brews - 10 overdosing the whole bean & not using the knocker prior to brewing (so grinding around 14.5g for a 13.8g dose). 10 brews dosing to allow for dose consistency when knocking 4 times (grinding around or nearest weight over 14g) and including all the fines in V60 & Switch 02 pour over brews.

There wasn’t any significant difference in brew time (std.dev 1 second), nor in extraction (std.dev 0.15%EY, within the noise level of a VST refractometer). However, I only had a subjective preference for a dose including all the fines, after knocking, in one out of the 10 brews. Make of that what you will.

Auto stop has ceased to work. Not a biggie & I’m perfectly happy to turn it off manually.
