Dead Niche Zero

Switched on the Zero this morning - stone dead. Looked at the power LED - not lit. Checked the plug fuse - fine.
Before I contact Niche or start investigating further does anyone have any thoughts, ideas please?

Rob666 - that is strange. I’m wondering if one of the cores in the cord has broken?

Rob666 Probably a daft suggestion but have you tried to plug it in to a different wall socket?

Pff… @Rob666 It could be a bad connection, if the LED is not on, it means the main board either:

Isn’t getting power for some reason
Has failed, for some reason.

If you have a voltmeter and know how to use it….might be worth checking whether the main board is getting power. If it’s not, then work back towards the plug.

Thanks chaps. Already tried a different socket. I can’t get at it at the moment because Mrs Rob has just washed the kitchen floor. I’ll check as suggested and report back.

Tried yet another socket and it’s now working just fine! It’s plugged into a four way splitter and it seems that the insulated pins on the plug were not making good contact. I think the insulated parts are a little longer than usual. A little odd given it hadn’t been disturbed in any way but I guess these things happen.

Rob666 stranger than fiction. in these situations it always amazes me that something can perform seamlessly for so long but that there can be sublte and unseen forces at work that literally overnight, that thing that performed so flawlessly simply stops functioning. Glad to hear that you got it going.

There is a lot to be said for having a hand grinder as a back up too!

tompoland It is very strange. It’s been in the same socket for a few months and hadn’t missed a beat! Then, out of nowhere, it just doesn’t work. Fortunately I not only have a hand grinder (Pharos) but a Eureka 65e as well. I’d been thinking I should sell it but now I’m not so sure.

Is it the socket or the plug, I have had sockets eventually go bad, when they do I replace them?

I’ve had that too with wall sockets and I do, of course, replace them. In this instance it’s a four way extension and the sockets are working just fine with other things just not the Niche. As I said above, I think the insulated part of the plug pins is a bit longer than usual and I suspect that was the cause of the duff connection. Might also have been a contact spring in the socket going a bit weak and exercising it has improved it

Rob666 Niche are super cautious about 110% meeting all approvals, so it must be in spec.

I checked and the insulators are the same length as other plugs so, by elimination it must be the socket. It’s all working now so I guess the spring unstuck itself. No warming of the plug and no intermittency so I’m going to leave it in peace.
