Coffee Advent Calendars

I noticed that Pact’s 2023 advent calendar is available to preorder, which prompted me to think about it. December this year could be quite well-timed for me to want to mess around trying a bunch of different beans out, perhaps it’s a good idea. 25× 25g bags for £30 sounds like quite good value for that… albeit since I usually use 18g at at time it’s a bit of an odd size for me.

Any rival ones I should be considering? Also, I generally only make espresso (and espresso-based) drinks, so would it be suitable or would I likely find that many of them only really suit filter or something?

It’s a shame it’s not 30g as that would just about be big enough to split, a 12.5g shot is a bit too small and 25g is too big

With most of the cost being in the packaging, it amazes me that they don’t put 36g in each bag. This would work out at 900g of coffee for the 25 days.

Otherwise it’s an egregious use of packaging, which although recyclable (in part?) still has to be made, printed shipped etc.. in the first place. Then the coffee has to be shipped. Just seems odd to not ship just under the Kg. That extra 275g of coffee really wouldn’t break them.

They claim the packaging is entirely recyclable, as far as that goes.

But yeah, I’m actually puzzled enough by the amount that I’m driven to use their contact us form to find out what gives. I’ll report back!
Perhaps one could collect all the ‘spare’ beans and make some custom blends 😉

The problem is, they want everyone to think it’s OK. I absolutely hate the amount of unnecessary (recyclable)packaging around products. I actively avoid products with too much packaging, recyclable or not. It seems as if these companies believe just because it’s recyclable…it’s OK?

A prime example is a product I don’t buy since beginning my diet again almost a year ago and for many years before dieting. Cadburys Chocolate fingers…they suffered tremendous shrinkflation but they manfully kept the box exactly the same size to hide it. The product inside could now easily fit in a box 50% the size, with a plastic tray 50% smaller and 50% less plastic wrap. This was actually why I stopped buying them 8 years ago.

It does seem the more “premium” the product needs to appear, the more packaging used.

Unfortunately, the grind we use for our pre-ground Advent Calendar coffees is a bit too coarse for espresso machines. It’s suitable for any other filter brew method!

Erm, ok. I specifically said it’s the whole bean I was interested in. But, good to know I’m sure. But wait, there’s more…

If you have a grinder at home, we’d recommend purchasing the Wholebean Advent Calendar and grinding fresh. As you have mentioned, we’d recommend brewing the coffees as filters.

So hey, if anybody here has a lead on some good value espresso coffee bean advent calendars coming up, please post about ’em. And if anyone fancies a filter one, well, here is one that certainly will exist, I can say that much.

Looks interesting if not a tad expensive for 425g of coffee. A different one every day is always fun though

I realised that the one-shot nature of these things isn’t very compatible with espresso generally needing a bit of dialling in, that’s put me off the idea again. Still, it does sound fun indeed.
