JHCCoffee - the answer for me is simple. I don’t. No multiple test shots, no refractometers, no profile creation, no data entry or note taking to that extent. The only data I keep is my grind setting for a specific coffee, so when I reorder again, I don’t waste a shot or two dialling in. 😊
The only thing I do, is, for example, if I don’t particularly like a shot, the next day I try it a little longer, or shorter, or use the Zero rather than the Duo. But that’s pretty much about it. I never, in my rather brief history with the serious hobby (approx. 12 years), kept notes of taste, or tried shots side by side. I suppose that keeps my life rather simple.
For me “the hobby” is to be able to drink a good cup of coffee. If there was a decent coffee bar down the road or at my place of work which made good coffee at a good price, I don’t think I’d have all my gear. I am certainly not interested in applying scientific methodologies under lab conditions to drink a cup of coffee in the morning. For that, there’s the internet and these forums, and those interested in that side of the hobby. I do read, and I try things others share (as my next coffee, that I will drink). If I like it, I’ll do it again. 😊👍
