Verion I’ll continue with my Niche Zero and restart my flat burr grinder search in the summer. Maybe it’ll be a Lagom P64/P100, maybe the BB T64, maybe a Niche Duo.
I was also in the same position prior to placing my preorder. I have a Niche Zero, and very nearly went for a Duo. I didn’t feel as though the flat burr used, based on the collectively-stated internet experience, was felt to be hugely different from the current Niche Zero profile. I may be wrong on this assertion, as I haven’t used a Duo, but all I really have to go on are the opinions of the web-based hive mind.
I liked the description of the output of the new Mazzer 200 burrs, particularly as my tastes run to the lighter roast spectrum. I didn’t feel the reviews of the espresso burrs for the Duo targeted the fruitier end of things, more that it gave an excellent medium roast profile. Again, this could be completely wrong as it is just conjecture, just showing my working! If I didn’t already have a Niche Zero, and wanted a flat-burr grinder for medium roast beans I would jump at the Duo.
The clincher for me was the fact that to get a ‘well made’ 64mm grinder from a proven manufacturer, you’re into Lagom/Zerno territory at twice the cost of the current Mazzer pre-order price.
I’m sure the T64 is great, but the multiple reports of bits missing/scratched/loose in the box doesn’t reassure me about their quality control or attention to detail, hence settling on a well-known manufacturer with a decent pedigree.
I fully appreciate past results are no guarantee of future performance, and it may explode once I get it on my bench… I’ll keep you in the loop.
