I know that phones exaggerate the noise level but, Jeepers, that sounds loud and harsh while grinding.
I have a feeling that I would prefer the workflow if the grinder was sideways on the bench.
As it is everything seems awkward to access withe the cup a long way under the body and the dial at the back.
Sideways would take up more room but make everything easier to get to.
Is anyone using theirs like that?
I’m not hating on it, just wondering.

Amberale it was my worry as well, especially my grinder sits in a tight space between the machine and wall yet I found it not an issue at all. Possibly because the grind adjustment is so easy to turn and with the cup being magnetic you just place it underneath and it’s finds it perfect spot?

Yeah I know everyone’s hearing is different but it’s quieter than the Duo for me. I’m basing this on the most scientifically accurate measure of all; my wife noticing…

I can see why the rear adjuster seems awkward, I was sceptical, but it’s one of those things in practice that’s fine. The position of your hand is effectively like turning a volume dial on a hifi or similar, you sort of adjust it from the edge rather than reaching round the back.

Unless you’re 4’ tall you’re not going to have issues seeing the setting.

I suppose you could use it turned sideways but remember in the UK our kitchens are about the size of a closet in AUS/US terms so it’s less feasible. You’d have to have the adjuster on the right as the power switch and gate lever would be on the ‘front’ then.

Thinking about it, as I just made a cuppa, the only thing I would change is the power switch to the front. This is most likely only issue for me as it’s a tight space and I really need to reach to turn on and off.

Funnily enough I was just thinking the same.

I know with ‘commercial’ grinders there are requirements for switches (not easy to accidentally activate etc) and they’re often on the side so this might be a factor.

Not that it makes it any less awkward.

Mine was about £900 landed.

Versus the Duo- for me I was never a huge fan of how the Niche looks but gave it a try for switching between filter/espresso. Ultimately although it’s a brilliant grinder, I wasn’t hugely impressed with the filter from it and struggled with espresso shots immediately after filter ones.

I also prefer the balance of body/clarity from 64mm burrs.

If you’re only using it for espresso, I don’t know if you’d see huge improvements in the cup on your SSP based grinder. I can’t say for sure as I’ve never tried the SSP burrs.

Edit: I noticed the Mazzer page is down. They might’ve sold out.

Some encouraging usage everyone! Once I sort my new house completion date and moved in, I’ll relook at the grinder again.

Surprised no one has shoved an SSP burr in it yet, but then I don’t frequent other forums where it might have happened.

The geometry of the l200D burrs are very different from the usual geometry. Maybe that’s the main reason everyone is liking that grinder, taste wise? I wonder how different the taste would be between the two. Has anyone ordered with he l189D burrs?

Coming from a different angle. Burrs are just burrs. I am presuming you could take these burrs out of the Philos and stick them into any appropriate grinder and achieve the same results. What really interests me is workflow and what it is like to live with. You cannot really compare 64mm to 83mm any more than you can flats to conicals. Also, why is everyone praising a thwacker and bellows all of a sudden? I always thought that they just demonstrated poor engineering?

dfk41 I was interested in taste in my comment. Not in workflow - hence why I tried to keep to the burrs.
