JammyDodger I debated the colour for a while, but glad I went black. Works well together.

Something about the feel of the Philos and the way it was packed that make it and the Micra feel like natural partners. I may be thinking too much into that though 😂

Yeah when it comes to build quality I think they’re both right at the top. Something reassuringly robust that’s apparent when using them.

That’s what I always try to convey to people when they’re like ‘What’s so great about such a simple machine that costs a fortune for a badge’.

It’s like shutting the car door on a Mercedes S-class vs a Renault Clio or something.

Simple pleasures, but goodness knows we need things like that in times like these!

BrewLiam this my setup I want to go for, just seems the tank choice, given both are commercial powerhouse brands! Can I ask how much the tax was on the philos, what was the overall total? My dad plays golf with a roaster who stocks the micra, hoping I can get a small discount if possible, fingers crossed!

thetravdog I used a VS3 with the Micra for 2 years. I’ve got the Hypernova burrs and it’s been really solid. upgraded because I had some extra cash and begun to want a bit more control and clarity in my coffee.

The Philos was about £840 from Mazzer. Another £165 in taxes and £14 in UPS charges. Anyone who bought on the intro price, please don’t tell me how good a deal you got! I wasn’t in a position to buy then 😩

BrewLiam I have it with the hypernova purple burrs in it too and it’s been a great pairing for my bambino plus and a good upgrade from the smart grinder pro I got with the bambino originally. I’m just ready to move into something beefier with flats and the mazzer fits the bill but the £1000 odd outlay it’s going to hit the wallet hard! I just need to stave off the upgrade-itis and be happy there, because I’m hoping given the build and Mazzer’s reputation it should last yonks

thetravdog this is it for me. No upgrades on this. I’m done on machine and grinder. An additional grinder one day maybe, but that would be for something completely different.

BrewLiam thanks, if you think the same as me that gives me hope then! I’m still a little bit torn on getting a duo for £250 less but I think the philos is the move, they had 5% off last weekend but I’m in no rush, will keep an eye out

thetravdog I thought the same with the Duo. Thought if I had any niggles at all about the quality or feel of the product that I’d regret the decision. Decided that was worth £250 extra years to me.

Adrianmsmith hi there! Sorry to jump in but wanted to ask you some questions regarding burr options for the Philos. I picked up a Philos with the I189D burrs and love it. I typically drink medium/medium dark roasts in milk. I’d like to pick up another burr set to have and wanted to see if you’ve had trouble fitting non-Philos burrs?

I’m considering the SSP HUs, the Mazzer 233M, or the Lab Sweet Cast V3s. Still want a full bodied shot. I have heard some folks say they couldn’t grind fine enough even after resetting the zero point, but not too many details available.

I could buy a spare 189 burr set, but the 233M is a fraction of the price…

As with MattH reply above. I do not know why you would need a second set of 189.

I only really drink what I’d call flat white or latte. I have the 189 and the 200 burrs and I actually prefer the 200.

I currently have SSP burrs fitters which are on loan from another member. I have not had them long enough yet for him to forget!!!

As I understand it, the main difference between various 64 mm burrs is the centre hole size and the standoff. All I have changed to fit the SSP is the o-ring.

I will most likely be going back to the 200 burrs.

Taste and mouth feel wise. The SSP fits somewhere between the 189 and 200. Other than that, I am shocking at describing taste!!

A word of warning when changing the burrs ensure you have the correct screwdriver bit which is a ph2sl And readily available from wera . A small wooden object is great to trap the sweeper arm and allow the screws to be loosened and tightened.

I kinda assumed the 189 were basically the philios version of the 233m ?

I would not bother buying a spare set of 189 unless you are grinding kilos a day - i suspect they will outlast you 😂

Now the question would be is the 200 worth getting if like me you are a med/ dark roast Milk drinker…..

I also do believe adding milk makes most extraction screwups well hidden so everything is a much more pleasant experience !!

MattH yes, my fear with the 200 set is the more acid forward flavors. Typically acid in milk do not go well. I just don’t drink straight espresso enough to appreciate it but who knows, maybe I will with the 200 set. I may just buy them and give them a fair shake.

Adrianmsmith Fair point on not needing another 189. I generally don’t like acid forward flavors, especially when they are mixed with milk.

Which SSP burrs were you using? Also, any idea which o rings you used? 37mm ID? My gut tells me I would like the SSP HUs since they offer similar mouth feel to the 189Ds but with more flavor separation.

The natural choice for a different burr would be the 200 given they’re designed for the grinder.

I’ve not tried it myself but as I understand it, other burrs don’t work brilliantly in the Philos.

Note that there are 2 versions of the 189 burr.

The one in the Mini is 189D, the one in the Philos is i189D.

We drink quite a few milk drinks with medium roasts, quite a few fruit forward med roasts and the 200 burrs are really great.

Obviously heavily dependent on the beans but you can get some pretty good cake/dessert flavours with some of the med/light stuff and milk.

HarveyMushman This is good to hear. My most in rotation beans are a mix of Dark chocolate/brown sugar/cinnamon and orange peel (so maybe I will actually taste the orange this time). The other is a slightly darker medium with cherry jam. I think I may just have to purchase and give it a shot.
