Its a scary prospect, im fixed till april next yr, when i come off i expect ill see an 80% increase on the prices that im paying which were another 80% on what i was paying, what gets me is how they are allowed to increase a price nearly 200% in 2yrs

im seriously thinking, what i will do is fire the 4 employees of my buiness, close my doors, shut up shop and go on the dole, seem to benefit that way,

I’m working on a large extension for a factory that has to have their electrical supply upgraded to cope with the new machinery. The issue they have found themselves in is that if they switch to the supply, their own 2000A HV fed transformer, they will loose their current rates for electric. This will increase the yearly bill by an estimated £80000 before they even switch on the new stuff..

As such, the £2m extension may be laying unused for another 14 months until they will be forced into a new tariff.

Things are messed up ya’ll…

Looks like the 65% projected increase in October is out of date. Now more like 80% it seems.

We’re all doomed.

Like some others, my (Sage Oracle) machine turns off after 20 minutes but stays pretty hot for quite a while after, so it comes up pretty fast from there. I used to have it coming on in the AM on timer when my routine was more or less fixed but now, I just try to turn it on (or get the Mrs to, if she’s closer) about 15 mins before I want it. It only takes about 5 mins from cold. As I have 1 or 2 cups most days, 3 or 4 at most and sometimes 0 cups, and at varying times, it’s pointless using the timer.

Sure, it’s not cheap in power these days, When was proper coffee ever a cheap habit? The coffee itself isn’t exactly cheap, and as for the machine, and all the ancilliary bits …. well, ouch.

It’s just a bit more expensive now than a year or two back.

It’s going to be a grim winter for so many people, especially the elderly. I suspect there will be a lot more deaths this year. Sure it will be put down as Pneumonia, or Flu, Covid etc…The figures will be hidden, but we all know the age group that’s dying this winter.

If they do have electricity cuts, then no heating is going to work, unless people actually have a gas fire. Anyone stupid enough to have fitted an air to water heat pump now there is no renewable heat incentive will be in trouble (cost and heating) because they have to be on all the time I even wondered about a small lithium generator with inverter to heat and electric throw I have, for emergencies..it only uses about 120 or so watts maximum. This means a generator with a 1kwh capacity could keep me warm for 8-10 hours.

Although these lithium things are so expensive, it’s cheaper to go to bed.

I have been looking at generators for some time now. Honda have a new one which would give 2.6kw this could run a small kettle, our ninja multi cooker or even a small heater and as it’s an inverter should be ok to run our central heating. So we could run any of these individually and survive. My only concern being that it does not do any harm to any of the electronic control units, as the under floor heating control unit does not look like it would be cheap. Have been looking for alternative cooking methods should we loose gas as well. This would be limited to either bottle gas or a new barbecue or something down those lines. As I am always looking for what could happen and then be prepared, as I think with our government we could be in for a sxxt storm. Yes my glass is always half full. I always look at what would be the worst outcome and anything better is a bonus. It’s a wonder that I have lived for so long.

If you use a generator you will need some means to disconnect from the mains.

Incase of power loss if engineers are working on the line there is also the problem from back feeding .

Bottled gas is getting very expensive.

Elcarajillo I was considering having a change over switch fitted, it all depends on cost. The other alternative would be to run a lead in from the generator. I used to be an electrician, I do have a 16amp feed out from the dis board to the garage, so could do a bit of reconnecting if needed. I am not part p registered. But who would know.

Elcarajillo Fair point re: isolating supply if self-generating, but surely the two-pole MCB just after the meter is adequate for that purpose?

Meldrew To be honest, I’m more concerned about gas being rationed or cut off than electricity (though, obviously, without electricity, all the gas in the world is rather useless for central heating…)

CoyoteOldMan Good point, might look at a good bbq lol. It’s just trying to balance being prepared without to much cost and with it then being a total waste of time if nothing drastic happens. I remember the good old days of the three day week and the power cuts. With regards the isolation you also need to put in a earth rod when connecting a generator in place of the mains. That’s why a simple socket outlet from the generator and plugging things in directly could be best. I was looking at bbq or a pizza oven for the garden anyway so it might make me make a decision quicker.

CoyoteOldMan my concern is the government seem to be freely allowing OFGEM to raise the cap. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I believe they might be frightened of running out of electricity capacity, and by allowing the price to go higher and higher they are hoping that we will all use a lot less electricity.

So possibly a cack handed way of trying to avoid blackouts!

DavecUK If over half of our gas comes from the North Sea why can’t the government control prices better. I have said it before, why has all our services been allowed to be privatised. France have controlled their electricity price’s because the government own EDF.
We should use the coal fired generating stations and address the climate situation later, for what little difference we make anyway.

The thing is what can we do, as a young family, bar using gas/electric how do I stop the cost.

The standing charge is over £200 a yr.

            Everything is led, just junk

The problem is in a time of crisis, people in charge and energy companies are still talking about net zero???
