With regards to biological (bio) vs non-bio, what’s he difference? Also, I noticed these days it’s virtually impossible to buy powder. We used to buy Ariel colours, or Persil, but now all you can get is the liquid or liquid tabs, and they are bio. We also use Fairy powder, non-bio, and that contains bleach as you said.

    MediumRoastSteam just read what it’s circled in your attachment. It says setting 4 is 53C. It looks like, to me, if the scale is proportional, that 55C is where the “star” is.

    DavecUK Oh the reason for 55C is legionella, 55C Kills Listeria in about 2 hours, 60C to 65C kills it in 15 minutes…but really it’s not a risk to have 55 in a domestic environment. Especially if the tank is only 70% hot with a lower cooler layer…lower than 55 is probably not great.

    Hot water
    I checked the instruction for this boiler. It shows the hot water range is 40 to 70. If proportional, I am thinking the average mark up is 4.3C and 4 will be 58 and e js about 62?

    I am wondering if 4 is enough for the hot waters to kill the bacteria. The hot water tank has a temperature control and is set at 55C.

    The same scale would apply. I will drop this to 4 than the recommended 5 and see how it goes in the winter!

    We wash a full load running at 30C for 20 mins for all daily wear once a week. They are hardly dirty. The only issue with the full load is the non-colour stuff. We wash one weekly cycle full load and the alternative week two loads of 30C and 20 mins each for colour and non-colour (mostly whites).

    The powder is mostly non-bio and the conditioner is always diluted with water (50:50).

            LMSC there’s plenty of biological washing powder about, I use biological because it has enzymes and those enzymes work well to degrade fats proteins and other things in clothes and work well at lower temperatures.

                        I would put a wash on every 1.5 weeks before the children came along but now it’s almost every day for me too!!I used an electric dryer once when I was in university and said never again (it shrunk my jeans but we were also paying a meter with coins at that time!!) always air dry my clothes

                                You are right. However, the three key take aways from the article aren’t different. He does make it clear what we do now isn’t useful anymore. He was saying we should have taken action in the 1960s and 1970s. 😊

                                  Are there any fans of the various guises of heat pumps on here. Does anyone own one? How do they find it? If you want to turn the heating on for that last half hour before you go to bed, what do you do? Why do we have this fixation with following orders from a mob called the Globalists who do not have anyone interests at heart but their own. The older ones of us will remember the power cuts of the 70’s. They were not fun! SO, we have to ditch all fossil fuels in favour of green electricity……when are the masses going to wake up to this con!

                                    We have been there before mate! The deterioration of the climate situation is all scientifically proven. Some one posted a few scientific threads shared earlier. Many of us will never agree. That’s fine. :-)

                                    I agree all these greens, solar, heat pump and so on won’t solve the problem. Period.

                                    We should have acted 50-70 years ago. We ignored because organisations and countries in this part of the world had put their commercial interests before the environment. Fast forward, we are now saying net zero by 2050. The other parts of the world are saying sorry, we hear you; we are growing, the fossil fuel is the most economical route (what ever may be the reason); and, we would like to adopt net zero, reduce it gradually but not eliminate by 2050

                                    The efforts by the countries like the UK in the net zero space are not even a drop in the ocean. But, we will succeed in dragging every down except those who will be very busy lining up their pockets 24 × 7.

                                      We’ve got Hive to control the heating but I’ve been thinking about getting some of their smart TRVs (turn down/off bedrooms during the day for example). Anyone have experience of these or similar? Are they worth it? They are quite expensive, so wonder what, if anything, I could save long term from using them.

                                      Does it even make sense to have the heating off in different rooms at different times of the day? Without meticulously closing every door in the house at all time (not going to happy with young kids around), would it end up a bit of a false economy?

                                        Bicky We used to have hive system and please with it do decided to get smart radiator valves for all 13 radiators and regret it. They take long time to open up and start heating - even ¾ minutes. Had issues with automatically changing temperature and switching off during boost.

                                        since replaced with Tado with valves and they are so much better. Radiators get hot almost immediately and had no issues since.
