My first post on this forum… I have an existing set of 83mm SSP HU burrs and a Niche Duo which arrives tomorrow. Do I stick with the stock Mazzer Espresso burrs, or install the SSPs? Obviously, the SSP HUs are already seasoned, but if there's no real difference, I believe they'll have a better resale value than the stock Mazzers. Please help!😳

minute differenece, depends if you're used to them, you can forget taste quite quickly, try the duo first as is, adding ssp will need a recalibration

Only if you tell them @"PianoMan"#p69102 That looks fine, I wouldn't bother trying to calibrate (trust me on this). The more important thing is centering the burrs in the carriers top/bottom as the SSP burrs are slightly smaller in diameter. SSPs are approx 88.65 mm, Mazzer burrs are pretty much 83mm

profesor_historia That’s a good question. My SSP HU burrs produced great-tasting coffee on my previous grinder, the DF83. In fact, I only changed that grinder because it was occasionally inconsistent and frustrating to use. I, therefore, assumed they would work in the Duo, and give me the same, but more consistent cup. I left the Mazzer burrs as new to sell. In retrospect, this was a mistake, but then, we all make ’em. 😉

I still had to align the Mazzers. They were surprisingly quite misaligned.

How do you align the burrs on the Duo?

MediumRoastSteam Dry markers and shims. Same way as many other grinders. There was a consistent gap on both the HU and Mazzer burrs between 4 o’clock and 9. Clearly a manufacturing issue. My Mazzers are now completely bang-on 👍

And most importantly, what’s the difference once aligned? What was the actual improvement compared to just leaving it alone?

MediumRoastSteam I marked and shimmed the fixed (top) burr, at around the 7 o’clock point, where the burrs couldn’t touch. I had the luxury of testing two burr sets, both had a problem in the same area, so it’s an issue with my particular Niche Duo, not the burrs, but, at least it was consistent.

It took about half-an-hour, and was quite easy to do. I didn’t try a before-and-after shot, as I’m sure I wouldn’t tell the difference, given it’s not side-by-side.

They weren’t misaligned to the extent there would be much change in grind quality, but I now know the machine is working at it’s best. 😀

Adrianmsmith I swapped them straight over. It was always my intention to use the HU burrs as I owned a pair. I would remove the burrs for alignment, anyway. I’m now running the stock burrs as the difference in taste isn’t huge and the SSPs seems a little “off” in the Duo.

As for the DF83. I couldn’t get two shots the same out of the thing. Maybe I had a duff one. 😂

Adrianmsmith Mine was a V2. One shot would be 50 seconds, the next, with exactly the same prep and weight, would be 20 seconds. It was a source of great frustration. The Niche has been completely consistent since I got it a few days ago. To be honest with you, it’s a huge relief. I thought I was doing something wrong, or just missing something. 😨

Mine wasnt quite that bad but you’d get 2 shots consistent then go to about 13 or so seconds different than back to base etc.

Duo is bang on.

PianoMan The Niche has been completely consistent since I got it a few days ago. To be honest with you, it’s a huge relief.

The Duo was tested to within an inch of it’s life, before moving on to almost 6 months of end user testing. So of course, it works well.

Adrianmsmith I greased the thread on my DF83, aligned the burrs, made sure the little rubber clips were inserted correctly, but to no avail. Oh well 😅

Got fed up keep forgetting to change grind settings. Im always making 1 decaf and 1 normal (im normal!)

Settings are very different, decaf needing a much finer grind. Niche is now dedicated to decaf as my wife also likes it and will use it!!

I think I’m settled now for a while….

Oh yeh, the Key is still for sale also. (Recently sold df83, zero, T64 / ssp , 1zp k ultra, 1zp je plus and in the darker days sage smart grinder pro)

In the last 8 months ive had 4 espresso machines including the Evo2 which i dont think will be moving anytime soon!! (I was initially banned from further spending after purchasing the evo mk1, just 2 machines back).

She has said NO to decent, londinium and Nurri. I know most on here will agree with 2 of those NO’s. (Me included now).

Adrianmsmith That really is a “journey”, as some people say. 🤔 ,🤣 The Decent really does look like an “End game” machine. However, outside of the grinder, I’ve not experienced the gear lust some people have for crazy-expensive gear. I’m already too embarrassed to admit my coffee expenditure to friends.
