An update. I got my 49mm step down basket from sworksdesign.

After a bit of fiddling and dialling in …

I can grind a whole 2 notches COARSER. So on my Niche Duo where I was at a 5 before, I am now at a 7 on the dial. Still using my same 18g recipe. Coffee tastes great.

A negative is now I’m getting soupy pucks , due to the distance between my shower screen and the puck screen in my portafilter. My portafilter only locks in at about 6:30/7 o’clock on my grouphead … using a Rancilio Silvia Pro X.

I can’t push it in anymore due to the basket protruding a little bit (compared to my normal VST basket). So I need to somehow work out a way to minimise that space. Updosing doesn’t fix it , it’s something to do with the basket. They supply a spring but I don’t really want to use that in my workflow.

The spring will fix the issue, so maybe at least try it.

Raja123 you are right. The spring has fixed the issue and I’m getting super clean pucks now.

However I’ve had to down-dose to 15g now to use the spring. I suppose it’s a good thing using less coffee?…

Points to note … I’ve had to grind finer (due to downdosing) and shot time is longer now using the spring.

I guess I was hoping to not use the spring as it adds to workflow but all good.

DavecUK i don’t recall this happening. I speak of you often, actually, in my discord hangs when discussing manufacturers like Lelit and ACS, etc. Not sure when this was but if it did happen, I certainly did not see you. And you did not interact with me, otherwise I would have been glad to chat with you.
I will own the fact I am very tunnel visioned in expos. I get overwhelmed socially and tend to have myopia. I always tell people if they see me, approach and grab my shoulder or something because I otherwise won’t notice. Apologies if I made you feel bad.
In other news, I wish I knew why @Adrianmsmith dislikes me so much 🤣

As long as the resulting brews taste good, I think 15g is fine for a dose. On my strietman, I was using 12-14g doses, and the shots were great.

dang2484 hard to tell. The shots are a lot tastier now than before. And I didn’t have to buy a new machine. + the quality of sworksdesign is amazing.

But yea there will be cheaper options from the Chinese manufacturers very soon for 49mm step down baskets.

drdre89 I would like to try it, I find shots in my la marzocco 7g baskets are better than standard doubles and I had a la Spaziale years ago that I struggled to pull a bad shot with but the 200 pound price tag is off putting!

By adding the spring into the equation, I noticed it adds about 10 seconds to the shot time. Due to the compression of the puck which takes the water longer to flow through. Still I’ve had no channeling.

I was actually grinding too coarse before as the spring was confusing me with the shot time, so I went finer and now am getting tasty shots without being too ‘bright’.

Am also using a paper filter.

This is weird! Only mentioned this the other day and been using a 7g single La Marzocco baskets for years.

I think a lot of it is industry and driving consumption as well. Why use 7g grams for shots when you can use 18g + and double your money. Plus to mention the addiction factor, the more caffeine you use the more people need!

dang2484 - not necessarily. I for instance like a bigger cup of coffee, and like more volume as an espresso.

Of course, some people have the luxury to drink coffee all day long, frequently, so pulling single shots is great. I don’t have that luxury, so a bigger drink for me wins.

dang2484 I currently use a single basket for dark roasts - especially if I’m running a hopper of supermarket beans (M&S). The lowish extraction actually does “justice” to them. Cheap, and typical flavor profile you’d get from a reasonable cafe. :D

Easy to over extract a dark roast which maybe a double shots doesn’t help with.

Cuprajake handy for relatives that I don’t want to give my best beans to. To tame the flavor, single basket and right grinder is a must. Hopper on Bentwood V63 ensures packed prebreaker chamber, leading to a very coarse grind. Low extraction basket keeps the harsh notes out. Works remarkably well. I pick bags that have 15-months remaining on the best before date also.
