Roasters who include a "Roasted On" date

I thought this could be stickied for a little bit. I aam genuinely interested in compiling a list of roasters who still include the above info. I have received 4 × 500 gm bags of beans this morning from Coffee Compass who I know used to include a roasted on date. It annoys me when you get a generic best before label. 2 of the 4 labels are unreadable. The other 2 say BB 07/2025

you could assume the batch no means roasted 30/07 but you shouldn’t have to make assumptions really.

prezes I think the bottom figure is the batch figure not the roasted figure. On the bags with complete labels the top number is BB 07 2025 and the bottom number a 4 digit batch code

it’s a bit of a coincidence, as per @prezes comment, that this 4 digit batch number resemble a day/month (it even has a space “30 07” - which could be interpreted as 30th of July), and that was 2 days ago, and 1 year away from the “best-before” date, if only month and year is considered.

But… We shouldn’t be make making assumptions - I think that’s the key message, whether inferring roast date from a best before date or from a heading which does not read “roasted on”.

Rave, Coffee Compass, Django, Black cat, regularly buy from these and all have had roast dates on them!

dfk41 - I understand. But… Isn’t that “30 07” the actual roast date (even though it says “Batch No”?

MediumRoastSteam It could be but then the law says they have to have a batch number so the roaster can trace the roast in the event of a complaint. I suspect that you are right though.

So if you roast 2 batches of the same coffee on that day…how do you know which batch is which? As someone pointed out, you shouldn’t have to make assumptions.

Yeah, I won’t buy bags without a roast date.
One of the reasons I like buying in person, rather than online.

So here is a surprise. The first surprise is I actually visited Costa Coffee because I was desperate On the way home from working deep down south 🤭.

The guy was filling the hopper and I asked if there was any chance I could have a look at the bag.

What is interesting is it did have a roast on date even though it was quite long ago it had it. It also stated it was packed in protective atmosphere and to use within 48 Hours of opening.

I still prefer McDonald’s when I’m out but hey ho just thought I would share!
