Had my machine in for a service and repair and got the bad news this morning.

Good morning Jason

Unfortunately, your machine is not repairable given the findings of our engineer.

The engineer has inspected it and found the following:

Failed weld on steam boiler

Failed weld on group boiler

Blocked group head – Scale build up

Failed inlet solenoid valve

The machine is condemned – not safe to use.

Now on the lookout for a new machine, so Philos grinder put on the back burner.

Gutted isn’t the word

Jason1wood that’s a litany of faults. I had to go back through my notes, because it was over 11 years when I last reviewed one. The brew boiler is brass, the steam boiler is copper. This means the joints are brazed not welded.

Blocked group head – Scale build up (completely fixable)
Failed inlet solenoid valve (probably not failed, but scaled (might well be repairable by disassembly and descale), new ones are inexpensive and available.

It sounds like the machine has been fed with poor quality water, this not only causes scale build up and all sorts of problems as you have found but also causes the brazing and copper rot in boilers! The move to stainless boilers over the years has reduced this enormously, but as always suitable water must be used. depending on exactly where it is and how bad it is, the boilers “may” be repairable, but most people lack the skills to do it or assess it.

The boilers may be available from QM and it’s worth asking…

This verona is the one you reviewed and sent back to BB. We spoke back in the day and you praised it.

Yeah my fault for bad quality water. Lesson learned.

Sorry to hear that, but as Dave said I think it could be repairable. The cleaning and small parts replacement is doable.
The hard part is finding a ’good welder it could probably be repaired with nickel bronze rod which is very hard and very strong ( not the silicone bronze ) often used in car repairs.

eeeh. nasty, Iwas visualising a leaky seam / weldline. I would like to see it cleaned up but I think it probably beyond repair.

Yes, will get it back, strip it down and send to recycling.

Now to see what else is out there.
