Being a coffee pleb, when joining a community like this, my overall impression of those more knowledgeable than me, with better, or should I say more ‘sensitive’ taste buds than mine, are after one thing… that Nirvana cup of mahogany gold. The one that gives you the right mouth feel, the nuances of the multitude of flavours on offer, because why else would you spend thousands and even as some of you do, delve into the science of it all to reach that goal? But then there are a tiny few like me, who are not blessed and are just happy with being able to make a decent cup, that knocks the socks off any supermarket powder (or stale beans) they have to offer, a cup to make me go Ahh!
But the important thing for me, whether just playing at this real coffee malarkey or completely immersing one’s self in it; isn’t half the fun getting there, making the mistakes, doing the tweaks, trying different things, trying different coffee making machines over time as many of you have? And won’t AI take that away?
If AI gets to that goal instantly and every time you make a cup, won’t that just be the same repeatable equivalent of chucking in a spoonful of instant and pouring on some boiling water… but with a better taste? Where’s the fun in that?
For me, it is the same with food. Bunging a supermarket pre-made Charlie Bingham Lasagna in the microwave for me dinner, instead of lovingly making one.
Convenience will be (and is for many of the younger generation now) the ruin of people actually learning cooking, baking and yes, coffee making skills, or what is the difference between good, bad or downright ugly tasting stuff they put in their mouths.
