One thing I notice while using the Aromaboy without a screen is the presence of constant harshness of the coffee when brewed without strainer. I believe the reason is the coffee is constantly agitated.

It is not a deal breaker, but would prefer to eliminate.

Brewing 15g with 200g water at 15% gives a good strength.

LMSC I’ve not noticed this, I have had some of the best brews from the Aromaboy, but not necessarily with the stock cone.

The reason I used a strainer with manual brews was to break up the hose-like stream, that can blast the coffee bed, for cleaner brews. In other words, to closer emulate the more gentle dropping of the water from an auto drip brewer.

I really enjoy my Aromaboy. This is probably because I can set it up and know after 4 minutes it is about ready. But, by far, my preferred taste for blck coffee is always 34 gms pulled from 17 gms beans as an espresso shot then topped up with about 5 ounces of water. I find it gives a much stronger taste which I enjoy. Soon I am going to be looking for some more ‘better quality’ coffee suggestions, suitable for both methods

dfk41 I guess you could try brewing at 17g:220g, or scale up your ratio to 1:13 (22g:290g) in the Aromaboy for a similar strength? You’ll need to make some grind adjustments.

MWJB I’ve not noticed this, I have had some of the best brews from the Aromaboy, but not necessarily with the stock cone.

It makes a nice cup, especially with V60. Just the lack of strainer disturbs the smoothness, while gives sufficient strength, say at 75g/L. Adding the strainer gives a smoother cup, but takes away the strength even at 75g/L. The harshness isn’t unpleasant, but will be great without it. It’s a trade off. 🤷🏽😊

MWJB MArk, having thought about this and not come to a conclusion, I loosened the grind off a few notches using 22g and 290g water. The brew was complete about 20 seconds faster that normal. It definitely tasted stronger but should i have tightened or loosened the grind please?

I would expect you to have to grind a tad finer to extract the 22g dose with less water (290g, vs 330g).

MWJB Funnily enough I thought it tasted better, but this might just have been stronger. Tomorrow I will re adjust and report back

Jairo Arcila Yeast and Strawberries co-ferment

Grabbed a white plastic V60 01. I would have preferred a black which wasn’t in stock.

Brewed 15g with 210g water with dry bed at 3:15 mins at 15% 400 Kruve (#17) on the Duo.

I used Hario’s Project waterfall paper which was too big on 01. @MWJB, do you have a filter paper recommendation for V60 01 for the Aromaboy please ?

I am thinking either use the same paper or convert and use the Kalia 101.

Coffee was good, it hit the notes on the bag and scored 8/9.

My ‘go to’ is Rombouts #2, folded to fit V60. Not tried the Kalita with it (run out for now).

I used to trim down the 02 Hario papers with scissors for 01 use at times, only takes a moment.

Zennor’s Colombia El Jaragual Thermal Shock

Brewed on the Aromaboy at 15% 400 Kruve. I have been dosing either 15g or 18.0g for this brewer at 1:14 ratio on V60 01 using Kalita 101 paper. I don’t fold it to the V60 01 size. It fits fine as it is. I wet the paper with hot water, dump the coffee and use the strainer. It gives a clean, a smooth and a nice cup of coffee every time. The coffee has good strength and retains all the flavours expected from the bag. I prefer the coffee with strainer than without.

The El Jaragual is lightly roasted with a complex body - nice, juicy and sweet acidity (as in passion fruit at the start and stone fruit as it cools down). The finish was more like a fruit tea. I scored it 7.75/9.

Brewing on the switch and espresso should also be good.

Edit:

The decaf requires brewing at 80g/L (1:12.5) to get the best out of the beans.

LMSC Zennor’s Colombia El Jaragual Thermal Shock

Brewed at 12% 400 Kruve (#32 on Duo) as a Hybrid. It did not stand out like yellow fruits and co-fermented but it’s nice. The fruity acidity was as in stone fruits scoring an average 7.5/9.

Taith, Rwanda, Nyamasheke, Gasharu, anaerobic natural red Bourbon - Quite different from many Rwandans I have had, less of the typical tart red fruit (red currant, cranberry, hibiscus), more a sweet white grape/white wine/pear character over a familiar ‘coffee’ base. Not one of those really ‘out there’ coffees, but very nice indeed.

12.5g ground at 68.5 on Niche Zero, 185g brew water, V60 01 cone with Rombouts paper, cone preheated with boiling water prior to loading into the Aromaboy.

Note: Your cup must be no taller than 62mm, for the V60 01 to fit in the Aromaboy.

Subjectively hitting 8/9 (AKA 4.5/5.0, or 88%).

£12/100g.

Hey folks! With a lot of interest, I read all of your detailed descriptions and challenges making coffee with the Aromaboy. As someone who mostly wanted a more convenient way to do my specialty filter brews without having to babysit the brew constantly, I was wondering what the most important mods would be:

Already ordered the Mokapot 9 Cup filter screen for more even water distribution, as the massive channelling and uneven/ too quick of an extraction seem like the biggest issues to me
Is the silicon tube adjustment necessary, or was this discarded in the myriad of test runs?
What alternative filter holder is suitable for the standard Aromaboy pot? Is there a big difference here?
How do people run with alternative filter paper/ filter holder combos?

Very much looking forward to your insight and comments on how to mod the Aromaboy, so it can become an Aromaman lol. Cheers from the UK!

Regarding alternative filter holders, the best fit I have found for the standard Aromaboy carafe & brewer is the Fellow Stagg X. It’s quite pricey considering the cost of the Aromaboy in the first place. I tend to use it for smaller brews (12.5:185g). I use Kalita 155 papers with it. Slight preference for V60 01 with Rombouts #2 filters (62mm max cup height) at this brew size, but not enough to say it’s significant. I’ve not been using any further mods/interventions with these.

No difference in extraction yield between these 2 brew cones, Stagg X brews take, on average, 7 seconds longer than V60 01.

The glass Kalita 155 also fits with the stock carafe, but I’ve not had such good results with this, with or without the Aromaboy.

Not done any A/B tests against the stock cone at full pot brews. I was reasonably happy with the stock cone for full pot brews (22:330g).

Never seen massive channeling, nor too quick extractions. However, I have a slight preference for cones that result in beds with smaller surface area (V60 01, Stagg x), as results with larger surface area don’t seem quite as good (Hario Pegasus 01, steel Kalita 185), probably due to less evenness of wetting/flow.
