DavecUK Don’t get taken in by all the hype around the Philos.
Gotta be honest, I value your opinion @DavecUK and you’re clearly exponentially more knowledgeable than 99% people in coffee but aside from agreeing it’s an expensive grinder, I do think you’ve been a bit unfair on the Philos.
Of course you’re more than entitled to your opinion, as we all are, but to write off a genuinely great grinder as ‘hype’ without spending some decent time with it hasn’t exactly given it a chance.
It’s the first ‘semi consumer’ electric grinder from one of the oldest grinder manufacturers in the world, the first ‘proper’ single doser they’ve made (let’s ignore the ZM) and most importantly has an exceptional burr set. And regardless of what anyone thinks of the grinders, we all know Mazzer make some of the best burrs ever to have been manufactured. It’s the reason they’re in an enormous number of grinders of all types.
I can’t overstate the quality of the Philos 200D burr and perhaps intentionally Mazzer have designed this burr to work best in the Philos. To write off the grinder means you miss out on a fantastic burr.
I’m not trying to be harsh, I just think by not spending some proper time with the Philos, you’re missing out on a good grinder. If you spend a month with it and still think it’s ‘meh’ and ‘hype’ then fair enough but to write it off based on a few goes at an expo hasn’t really done it justice.
I have zero reason to be loyal to it. If I thought it was sh*t I’d have sold it and bought something else, I’m not going to just keep £900 worth of gear for no reason. I don’t even love how it looks and it’s massive, but it’s so good I can’t see replacing it.
I’m just speaking up because I know people may skip over trying one just because you’ve said it’s ‘meh’ and I think they might miss out.
