Youtube v Tiktok

I have a passion for not being forced into paying for things on the internet. Example I really dislike the way if you use Google to search for anything you have to wade through th sponsors first of all. Do a search on Nuclear Bombs and you will not be surprised that Amazon, Ebay and Temu all sell them. The one that currently really annoys me is Youtube. I use Adblock as an extension for Chrome and it works really well in stopping all adverts popping up. Now though, they can detect adblockers and so force a 1o second delay before you play something.

Yes, I can hear some saying I am depriving Youtube of income and that I should pay……

I wondered if any Tiktok users had anything negative or positive to say about it?

As a man in his 40s, my only experience of TikTok is maybe two or three links people have sent me. That was two or three times more than enough to realise it’s not for me.

I despise YouTube ads but I’ll begrudgingly sit through them as there’s a lot of enjoyable stuff on there for me.

One thing that does wind me up a bit is when you have an ad, then an intro card saying ‘this video is brought to you by…’ and then on top of that some product placement in the video which is typically a cringey, really awkward forced segment that no longer feels even remotely believable as the creators are required to state that it’s a sponsored placement.

HarveyMushman TT……I have been playing around with tonight and other than a same but different interface it is broadly the same as YT. A lot of people post on both these days. I searched my YT favourites and found 80% on TT as well.

Can happily say ive never had tick tok, snap chat or anything else bar YouTube

I do have fb, but it’s locked down and i dont post its used for a couple of groups

Cuprajake I do not really use social media for anything………I detest Facebook but find it a necessary evil and it helps finding people. I did Instagram mainly when the Duo came out but the others……I do spend a lot of time on Youtube listening to music and political debate…..if TikTok can replace YouTube and be ad free fantastic but…..it is designed for phone users which is not ideal on a laptop

I did sign up to YouTube premium in the end but through VPN and paying about £1.20 a month for it which is fine.

Does premium remove ads completely?

I’m at the point where I figure I pay significantly more for TV channels where a lot of the content is arguably less interesting to me than what I watch on YouTube so premium seems a small price to pay to avoid the ads.

HarveyMushman yes it does remove all the ads. Plus you can download videos, contents to watch later, in a plane etc..

I do not us any social media platforms such as Facebook, Tik Tok, etc. My social media consists of this forum and my football club’s supporters forum. Yes, YouTube is my most used, because I find interesting chat such as The Rest is Politics, The News Agents, The MeidasTouch Network, Legal AF and various cooking channels which I find very informative and learn a lot from like my latest favourite, the Polar Ice Creamery.

For me, there are too many keyboard warriors on social media and I know I would take the bait and get myself all riled up, and life at nearly 67 is far too short.

As for the adverts forced down our throats especially on YouTube, yes it annoys me, but I skip them as soon as I can. At least with TV I can and do record any program on a channel with adverts and fast forward 30 x speed and skip the lot.

Funny thing is, I can honestly say with hand on heart, I have never seen an advert that has made me want to rush out and buy what ever it is that they are selling. I mean, just how many times does one need reminding that Fairy Liquid gives you lots of chuffin bubbles!.. and no, I do not use that either!

we have yt premium,

it also has yt music with it, so i cancelled my deezer subscription and got yt premium,

there are no ads, and you can have as much music as you like, ours is the family one, so like 5 accounts

That sounds like a good deal. I will have to look into that. What VPN are you using?

memzey proton vpn, but what my mate told me just now, they stopped letting new subscribers register without a Turkish bank card, i have used my Monzo/starling bank card last year without problem though.

I also cancelled my spotify and using YT music only.
