Measure out several gms of coffee……it is an awful lot! I think if you whip out the top burrs then there maybe some coffee there. The gap between the burrs and burr carrier might have some. Take out the bottom burr and there might be some there, but it is unlikely to exchange, more likely to impact. From memory when I was fixing up my Mythos, it was obvious that the burrs had not been removed in a long time and I think I cleaned out 1.5 gms of coffee. I keep on meaning to remove the top burrs a couple of months on but have never got around to it. As far as I know a bit of stale coffee never killed anyone, and once milk is added @Adrianmsmith would you actually know?

I am not getting into the milk arguement. I have six bags of beans on the go at the moment and all taste different, yes, even as a flat white.

I cannot help that you think everything once milk is added tastes the same.

I have even strayed into the blend territory and purchased a bag of fudge blend from rave which is actually quite interesting.

I i were a cafe making 1,2,3,4 drinks a minute i would never ever consider a single dose grinder i agree. But at home is it really inconvenient?

To me at home the hopper fed is inconvenient especially if a want to use bag c and bag a is in the hopper ☕

Spoken like a true non-believer who has never tried a top notch hopper fed grinder (and yes, I discount your Sage…..that would put anyone off!) I shopped around for a while and spent £350 on a used Mythos…..bargain of the year! I think that you would taste such a difference in the quality of your coffee you would add one to your already crowded bench!

The only way I can explain it, and it’s tenuous I’ll admit, is that where I don’t enjoy the process of something, I’ll either pay someone to do it for me or if that’s not possible, make the process as quick and low-involvement as possible.

Like moving house or gardening.

Or recently I bought a charcoal basket thing for the barbecue… technically it doesn’t do anything I couldn’t do before other than make cleaning 90 seconds faster…

I don’t enjoy measuring out beans, therefore if I can automate or speed up the process in any way, it’s a win, even if it only saves me a minute a day!

I am not suggesting that you cannot get the taste of coffee in milk, but it does alter it. In the same way that a person who buys a top quality single malt is unlikely to add coke to it. I drank all coffee with milk until 12 years ago when I had a Sage DB and was persuaded to do a modification allowing me to pull a shot at pre-infusion pressure. I tried it as an americano and could taste fruits that I never knew existed. When I re-made the drink with milk it was just bland. I now drink black americano most of the time but probably take milk twice a week. A lot of coffee shop blends are designed to be very strong but when copious volumes of milk are added taste pleasant. How many folks add 4 ounces or so of milk at home but if you buy a takeaway coffee get at least double that?

That’s what I mean! I can’t stand it, so I book someone else to come and do it. Same as moving house. Some of the best money I’ve ever spent having other people do it.

It’s tenuous as I said though, I think when you work a busy job or lead a busy life you get a false perception of needing to save time everywhere you can. The reality is those 20 seconds I’d save with a gbw grinder probably serve no actual benefit other than the process seeming quicker and easier.

but it shows even the 3k grinders have some retention, which is totally acceptable in my eye,

whether there is stale coffee in the grinder to be exchange it will be there if you single dose or have a hopper,

Adrianmsmith The hardest part about moving back to a hopper system, is re-accepting all those things that you have been brainwashed into accepting as part of the routine of making ‘delicious, tasty’ coffee (as one of our leading exponents would say). We are used to measuring in and out and expressing satisfaction at the 0.05 gm difference……I have never been happier! I know for a fact that I am making the best coffee that I have in years by the reaction of guests.

Mythos grinders when adjusting grind settings requires purging of atleast 10-20 grams. Bearing in mind, that is soley for purging out the grind chamber and chute. Grind setting changes accordinly to how long the beans are aging in the hopper. Which means likely you be dumping out atleast 30-50 grams extra beans during the dialing in process.

This is sort of our experience. I saw the Climpsons video once on how they dial in on the Mythos….and they dump a full double basket between adjustments. Certainly, there is a need (for us) to purge while dialing in, but a full shot isn’t necessary imo….circa 10g. While a bit wasteful, I agree, it has forcibly honed my dial-in skills. We have it down now that if the first shot isnt right, the second shot is good to go. The combination of that - and that we often go through kg’s of the same coffee reduces the waste. If the shot wanders with the weather, you can just micro adjust on the hoof, over a few shots, with no waste.

dfk41 I have played with the mythos in my friends cafe. Each grind setting changes we had to purge a full shot before the next grind setting takes effect .there are many tutorial videos I are many mythos one which shows this effect.. there are many cleaning videos for the mythos which shows terrible retention of grounds in the chamber .

Nope, I would be quite happy and expect that sort of range. I suppose it is a guessing game until someone takes the top burrs off on a regular basis and measures. Of course, this will be affected by the bean, the atmospheric conditions, whether the central heating is on, whether the sun shines on to the grinder…….why bother! We all say taste is King…..
