Adrianmsmith But I am not trying to convert you matey. I already know that you are a lost cause! You do teach me new things every day though. I was not aware of any Formula 1 cars with twin front seats, let alone ones that are wheelchair accessible……..LOL

I have stated many times that single dosing makes absolute sense in the right circumstances, which is primarily convenience, but, it is not the be all and end all in the grinder world. Do you not find it odd that all of the famed SD grinders out there, including the brand we have both had, are mega expensive yet in the cup do not stand head and shoulders above the opposition……and why should they? So many coffee related purchases are made by folks entering the big knob competition. Does a Slayer really make a better cuppa than a Synchronika? No but the pleasure the owner gets in bragging rights says all. Personally, I see a home user with one of a handful of branded legendary coffee machines and far from being jealous and wishing I owned one, I just think tosser.

So, you single dose and I have moved on. But, it does make for an interesting topic of conversation!

dfk41 true, we are talking here about diminished returns, a 5000€ setup doesn’t make better coffee than a 1000€ one, I am sure. The workflow is better, of course, but again,I a blind taste, who would know?

Of course some people won’t agree,as I said, this hobby is very personal and subjective, the important thing is that everyone is happy.

Adrianmsmith 8 cups per day? You work from home I understand? I go out to work at:07:00 and I am back home around 18:00, no way I could do some many coffees. However, we are talking about personal taste here, some of us only want to change the beans once in a while not several times per day. As I said, there is no correct answer here, everyone’s happy with his own routine etc. However I don’t make espresso at home anymore, only filters, far more enjoyable for me

What actually is a Mythos grinder

Serious question for once

If i Google or ebay search Mythos grinder to see what the fuss is is about, theres many what appears to be brands or models. So is there a specific Mythos that stands out. What makes it a Mythos apart from being the size of my kitchen 😚

There’s a few variants but essentially a very fast, 75mm flat burr grinder made by Eureka and sold as Victoria Arduino Mythos 1 or 2, and Nuova Simonelli Mythos.

They’re one of two grinder types used in practically every independent coffee shop (the other being a Mahlkonig E65 or E80). Mainly due to their speed and consistency.

Some (maybe all?) have a temperature control system to ensure fluctuations don’t affect grind output throughout the day. Fairly useless in the home.

The thing that makes them good for the home is that the burrs produce incredibly good coffee. They are massive though, and not the most attractive looking grinders from the business side as the sleeker side is usually facing the customer.

Adrianmsmith Eureka made the original Mythos which is the one I prefer. it is also made under licence for Victoria Arduino and Nuova Simonelli. As things do, they add models. The original span at 1350 rpm and is my favourite. Being out and out commercials they have added features now such as chamber heating and cooling fans, and they also spin at around 800 rpm. I think that has affected the taste profile or so I found, hence my ownership of the older model.

You can check the toal time the grinder has been in use for. In my case it was 138 hours which sounds a lot but not for a commercial. As long as the motor is sweet, the case canny then everything is replaceable at reasonable cost. The 75mm oem burrs used to be Mahlkonig but are now branded Eureka so who knows makes them! But, the burr set is top notch. It is easily accessible and the burrs are mounted at a 45 degree angle. If you have the space for one and can accept the nuances they are well worth a go. There are loads of the older ones on the market. If you shop around and are careful for less than the price of a Niche Zero you could be made for life. I think both of those photos were when I originally removed the burrs. I do not know how much coffee had been put through or when they had been previously cleaned.

We purge a few grams if it has been a while between shots/first thing in morning. Not saying we get it all…but it suffices to not then interfere with the pull….and we don’t notice the difference.

This is sort of our experience. I saw the Climpsons video once on how they dial in on the Mythos….and they dump a full double basket between adjustments. Certainly, there is a need (for us) to purge while dialing in, but a full shot isn’t necessary imo….circa 10g. While a bit wasteful, I agree, it has forcibly honed my dial-in skills. We have it down now that if the first shot isnt right, the second shot is good to go. The combination of that - and that we often go through kg’s of the same coffee reduces the waste. If the shot wanders with the weather, you can just micro adjust on the hoof, over a few shots, with no waste.

Yeah, I love the machine….it’s one of those bits of kit that build affection with it’s solid reliability and good function. We usually top our hopper up daily to not have too many beans loaded, but I’d have to say the years of mantra about the air-tight stored beans seems less important….no noticable deficits (to me) occur with beans in the hopper over only a few days.

Decades ago, the luxury option for home espresso was a small commercial grinder. They came with hoppers of course. Many of us lacked either the budget or the space for those behemoths and went with something cheaper. The budget option was a hand grinder. (It still is.) Hand grinders were single dosers, though no one called them that at the time.

Having gone decades grinding coffee with vintage Zassenhaus and other hand grinders, it was quite an adjustment when i had to go electric due to surgery. I chose a sturdy commercial machine with a hopper. Hated it! It was noisy, messy and changing beans and dialing in were a real pain. I passed it on to family and after recovering from surgery, went back to cranking out shots on hand grinders. Je ne regrette rien.

That’s extremely subjective and I’m far from an expert.

My method….

If I’m happy with a new bag which is usually 7 to 20 days after roast date i slap it in the freezer. If it a zip bag with all the air out and zipped or with all the air out and a bull dog clip (joe frex stainless are wide enough for any bag).

I then keep or take out 4 to 6 days or so in an airscape and finally weigh 20.3g ish on to small glass jars ready to throw in to to flat max or 21g of decaf in to the philos.

I have not had time to keep some to one side out of the freezer to see how it compares as my method is now habit and requires no thought or time!! i’m sure David and others will have wildly varying methods all of which are good and work equally well for them….

I never used to freeze but religiously ordered a bag to arrive just in time which required too much thought and planning!!! And recently all roasters seem to have 20 percent off in the same week so it was proving rather restrictive.

Im not really bothered how old it is now and gave a few bags in the freezer on the go. I imagine most is consumed within 1 to 3 months….

My only run in to date with a hopper grinder was a sage smart grinder pro, rather like expecting a fiat uno to win the grand prix as a comparison to all the other grinders ive since had through the kitchen my niche zero was end game in comparison 🤦🏼‍♂️

The mazzer mini g has me intrigued and i came close to ordering an atom W 75 recently but my wife “needed” a new phone and i drew tails!! 🥰🤦🏼‍♂️

Mini g has a price now £862 so around a grand landed in the uk
