Yep yuaga are very fast reacting scales.

Sorry folks, was having some time away from the forums,

Decent De1pro v1.45 - Niche Duo - Niche Zero - Decent is the best machine ever made -

Tried a few different scales but my favourite has to be the Acaia models. Frustrating to learn the different modes but so fast and so accurate and they look cool (most important)

tompoland So we seem to be at a consensus that the Ferrari/Porsche <insert favourite premium brand> is the Acaia scales.

What about the workhorse? The sub £100/100 euro scale that can get close to the Acaia.
There are luxury purchases and then above that there are Acaia scales haha and I would love to know if any of the rivals and considerably cheaper scales can compete.

I have heard the Yuaga scales are your go to budget option. What’s the midrange go to choice? Is there a midrange choice or is it budget or go big?

I believe some use the Felicita Arc which is essentially a lunar copycat. Seems to be more expensive now, not under £100 unfortunately.

HVL87 Its funny because I would imagine the difference wouldn’t be that noticeable, but it seems a lot of brands are never mentioned.

For instance go to any UK stockist and its Brewista, Rhino, Timemore, Hairo and then Acaia + insert budget brand £10-15

I know its not as sexy a subject as Espresso machine or Grinder, but I understand from all the videos I watch that weight and timings are quite a good gauge.

Is it merely that owning a top end espresso machines, usually mean a disposable income to buy a acaia and for any other user then budget will suffice?

I agree there should be more options in the mid-range. Not sure how Acaia can justify such a high price. Maybe a gap in the market?

I would also prefer to have one scale to use with both espresso and pourover. Thin and relatively small with a quick response time for espresso. Yet large enough for pourover with a timer included. Flow rate functionality and Bluetooth connectivity would be a bonus but not essential. Plastic build would be fine but ideally not cheap feeling!

You can get a cheap scale (~£10) that will weigh accurately to 0.1 of a gram. Pay a little more and it will also have a timer built in. Above that you can buy other features, design, brand name, build quality status symbols etc. You need to ask yourself what of these things you want and how much you are willing to pay for them.

Personally, after trying a few cheap scales (one of them Joe Frex, which looks exactly like the Yagua), I decided that a feature I want is that it won’t be prone to spills going inside where the electronics are. I got that by spending around £30 (Timemore Black Mirror from AliExpress). I am happy with them, though they are on the big-ish side. There is now a smaller (and more expensive) version: Timemore Nano.

It’s up to you to decide how much you want to spend and on what, but thinking you can’t weigh coffee accurately without a +£200 scales is like thinking you can’t tell the time without a Patek Philippe or do the school run unless you get a Maserati.

What do you want out of the scale?

I had a pair of acaia pearl and thought the 80 quid i paid used was a rip off, had i paid double id of been pissed

Ive had timemore bit chuncky really

For pour over bodum do one, red and black about 30 quid perfect. Like i say the yuaga are the same as these ones joe frex does for twice the price.

Some like the auto start function but for espresso thats kinda useless because we time from pump on not first drips. Haha

I’ve got the Timemore Nano Black Mirror scales. The buttons on the sides are annoying for accidental touches but it is a great size and responsive.

I bought these before I started using my Minima and finding them great: Has a little magnet underneath to keep it in place, goes down to 0.1g and has a timer. Finding it quite responsive and measures by bean over initial 0.5g.
