Gagaryn To give a bit more detail. I retired in 2019 working in a very data sensitive industry. In those days everything was stored on a NAS and worked well. When I retired, I moved the NAS from my office (which was converted to a bedroom) and in to the lounge behind my tv. With the fans running 24/7 it became a real muck magnet. I then lost it for 2 years as I was involved in a police operation. When I got all of my equipment back 16 months after I retired initially I pt it back into the system. Apart from all my work stuff I had reams of music, family videos etc.
Anyway, to cut a long story short I started backing up manually to an external drive which was fine. I had some of my work data saved to Icloud and Google drive taking advantage of the free stuff. I realised that was no solution so a year or so ago bought a Time Capsule from someone I know and set it up to receive incremental back ups (I store virtually no data on my macbook, it is just for ease if I want to do a restore). Apple have discontinued to support that. I want to put in place a single solution. Icloud makes sense but I believe that you cannot perform a Time Machine back up to it. If that is the case then there is no point in using it. That said, it would provide a permanent home for all other data. Or do I buy a new NAS setup and face the 5 to 7 year spinning disk problem if I am still alive? I find Icloud incredibly complicated!
So, I upgraded my icloud sub, then copied most of the contents of the time capsule over. I am left with 185gb f music which I will leave and maybe copy onto an external. I still have stuff of the Disk Station but I can fire that up later on and see if I can move anything. I had not realised that you could copy things accross using Finder, so I have learnt something tonight!
