New Mahlkönig E64 WS domestic GBW grinder

I got an email about this yesterday. Looks interesting. It’s good to see manufacturers move into the grind-by-weight space with the smaller grinders but this is the first time I’ve seen a gbw grinder targeted specifically at the domestic user.

I really enjoyed the x54 grinder and I love the coffee from the E65 and E80.

Not unreasonably priced for a MK gbw grinder either

HarveyMushman With a bit of luck, more folks will revert back to this type of philosophy. Seeing videos some make showing their routine in pursuit of a cuppa is just comical. It maybe hard to argue with any one part in theory, but whether these individual steps actually make a difference is debatable.

BB informed me at the weekend that Eureka had dispatched their order including my own Eureka Atom GBW, so naturally I am as excited as any bad tempered soon to be 68 year old can be about anything!

1000% agree.

I have absolutely no affinity for single dosing espresso beyond being able to use the same grinder for pour over.

I’m still very tempted by one of the gbw options though. I much prefer the on-demand approach.

Damn. Very interesting.i have always wanted to try E65S GBW but the price was the barrier. This might work well for my (might happen) coffee cart...

Yeah! The 65/80 are enormous too, far too big really for most home environments.

This one is certainly one of the smallest gbw’s I’ve seen. I had that hopper on my x54 so can sort of visualise the size of it and it looks to be nice and compact.

I agree with all the above. It is covering most of my wish list for a 'modern' grinder and with minimal faff. Also easy to use for those in the family who just want to press a button and get the correct dose. 999 Euros seems to be pretty competitive for GBW and Mahlkonig quality, even if it translates to £999 in UK.

Adrianmsmith E64 is likely a notch cheaper (price in Germany is 999EUR with 19% VAT, Mazzer mini G is showing 1149EUR for me), and Mahlkönig is likely more experienced with GBW technology. If I have to choose blindly I'd pick this over Mini G. Happy to be proven wrong though. Also we have F64 EVO SENSE which is in same range of features and price, and that seems be liked a lot
too bad neither of those will be a good fit for me as I switch beans very frequently. But make good secondary grinder for cafe.

There seems to be some mutterings online of this grinder being based on one of the other Hemro group offerings. As I understand it the x54 that I had was also. Whilst not quite as ‘industrial strength’ as the E65/E80 it was still a solidly made grinder.

I’d imagine the Mazzer might be better built (as it’s still marketed as a commercial grinder) and it’s hard to know how they’ll compare in the cup as I don’t know what burrs this MK uses.

These two new grinders are appealing to me. I have a Niche Zero but would like to have a flat burr for comparison but also GBW with mini hopper would appeal for lack of faff, not only for me but the rest of the family. Built-in scales and wi-fi firmware updating are def steps forward. It is about time that grinders got more hi-tec facilities like that, not to mention GBW.

They are also c. £1,000 which is very competitive these days compared to 'old tech' 64mm grinders that seem expensive at the £1,500 level.

jrling single dose is fun and everything when you have time. With the new trend of companies forcing employees back to office, or else, I suspect people will have to cut down their spending on coffee, both time and money. GBW will be very convenient for people who get accustomed with high quality coffee but now have less time to deal with. I would also predict home coffee facing a downtrend after a meteoric raise since 2020

delta76 Interesting comments. I'm retired so have time to spend chasing every microgram of weight/WDT/RDT etc etc!

BUT I am tiring of the lengthy process that single dosing requires or certainly encourages. More importantly, the other two family members will not engage at all, which is a pity. MK E64/ Mini G would enable them to just press the grinder button (that I have dialled in for the beans in question) and get the 'right grind' and hopefully therefore good tasting espresso (we don't drink filter) every time without needing to think about or get involved in 'tinkering'.

AND for me, I would really appreciate the design/engineering/espresso quality that hopefully these GBW hopper fed grinders should deliver and all for c. £1,000 or less. Win, win!

no time wasted here in the morning. I pre-weigh my beans in spice jars and use them for the whole duration of the week

jrling yeah they are definitely more convenient. Most people will not care if the retention is 0.1 or 1gr as long as it tastes good enough with minimal effort.
I am certainly interested in those GBW if I don't change beans that much - I have 3-4 beans in circulation at any time and might change beans depending on mood

I am not going to bore folks with my story about going back to hopper fed then upgrading to an Atom 75 grind by weight, but……I have chosen a grinder that is mature. I know for a fact that the early Eureka models several years ago resulted in inconsistent weights coupled with terrible reliability on the scales. now, I am not casting any doubts onto the reliability or ability on any of the gbw grinders mentioned but I am happy buying one that has established itself rather than waiting to establish itself.

Clodius Come on Clodius…..and the rest! You have to weight them out, many will then check the output weight, stir the grinds, use a spinner, then tamp with an auto tamper, then out a disc on top, then say a quick prayer to the coffee gods and not forget to genuflect, before starting to pull the shot…….ah, the joys of single dosing!

I saw your Hoon's coffee video, and I raise this
In a way, I don't feel satisfying about this. It raised the bar to good coffee - and makes a lot of people want to get good coffee think, wow, a lot of steps, I'll stick with my nespresso.
Truth is good espresso can be simple and relative cheap to make.
