What does light roasted really mean?

My only issue with this, is that from experience, you can still have an underdeveloped roast (in the sensory aspect) with normal solubility. plus solubility is also very origin dependent.

MWJB Agreed. That's why solubility is just one of the conditions that needs to be met. It's also a difficult judgement in many ways as you have to take into consideration the equipment that the customer is using, which is going to vary hugely.

Sure, but generally for readers of this thread, brewed coffee might be the most approachable way to explore light/med light roasts. Precision in grind setting and the need for a high resolution setting in the espresso range frees up choices & price requirement regarding grinders.

You can get decent quality manual brews with the majority of familiar, known useful grinders.

dfk41 I'd say it's somewhat acquired tastes, not everyone will like it. But if you still have your Mythos, it was deemed the benchmark for light roast grinder - it's really good at that.

delta76 The Mythos is still here, waiting to be replaced with a very similar burr set but housed in a Eureka Atom 75mm grind by weight. I used to have a very short temper which also meant that I was very quick to like or dislike something. As I get older, I find my attitude to things mellowing a little, so as at one time I would have dismissed all you shandy drinkers, I now find myself able to at least consider the topic of lighter beans! It is interesting that you tell me the Mythos was considered a suitable grinder for lighter roasts. I must add that to the advert!

Reminded of this thread this morning, whilst wrestling with a hand grinder (usually grinds beans like a knife through butter) and a very hard roasted bean. I have noticed this a few times with roasts that I suspected of underdevelopment (irrespective of colour, or solubility).

@LeefromFoundryCR , @InfamousTuba do any roasters use a durometer as part of QC with their roasts?

I have never really seen it used, I have read a little bit on it being used for green coffee hardness but I’m not sure if a durometer would be able to be used very well on roasted coffee because it is much more brittle.

It would require quite a lot of data and a comprehensive testing protocol to be useful. But I can ask some other people if they have seen one used before

It looks like it has some testing protocol, varietal will also be a thing to be aware of especially for mixed cultivar coffees like Kenyan and Ethiopians that have multiple varietals
