Clodius What, and pay them £15 or so a month? YouTube and the like groomed the world with free services for years, then all of a sudden it changes. There is a much easier way than paying matey!

Some things are worth paying in life. I’m an avid YouTube consumer. In life you pay with time or money, I feel like time is more precious to me these days.

Yeah of all the entertainment sources these days YouTube gets my vote as one that’s worth the price of entry. I enjoy a lot of stuff on there.

I’ve said this before but you can see why there’s a growing aspiration to be a profitable ‘content creator’ as insufferable a term as that is. When you look at the figures a few of the better creators are pulling in (and we’re talking six and seven digits p/a) it probably sounds more attractive than busting your backside for 40+ hours a week for 25 grand.

Don’t get me wrong though there’s a lot of not good content on there too. It’s very admirable that the guy you linked puts his content out selflessly with no desire for compensation.

I am 67 and grew up with the internet in its infancy, watching it progress to where it is today. Until the last few years everything was free. When I used to work in Newcastle 48 years ago there were no coffee chains. The idea of grabbing some form of beverage on the way into work every day costing now a few quid was alien. Then slowly but surely the long term plans have started to appear whereby you now pay for everything on a needs to basis. Mobile phones, subscriptions to this, subscriptions to that and folks seem quite happy with this.

I am an old dinosaur but there is no way I will pay to subscribe to anything. There are plenty of free work arounds for Youtube adverts and the like. You just have to not accept the rules big business tries to make you follow and open your eyes

I know what you mean and I’m still not a huge fan of the subscription model, sadly I think it’s probably the future. Even my car asks me to subscribe to features on a monthly basis…

There’s something to be said for the simplicity of just knowing for the next 12 months, your cost will be X but I think some people, myself included, struggle with the concept of not ‘owning’ this stuff, but effectively renting it.

I just sort of see YouTube like another TV subscription. A lot of what I watch on there is arguably better than some stuff I see on actual TV.

Use a browser such as Brave and enable its adblocker “brave shields”, watch without ads….

Respect to TWG for his transparency, to anyone considering YouTube premium I highly recommend Mozilla browser with ublock origin if you want the ad free experience on there and any other sites.

Ads on YouTube are a PITA but nothing life is free. For me, YouTube is useful when I need a ‘how to’ explanation when doing something like DIY.

If you don’t mind using a command line tool, yt-dlp would allow you to download any YouTube video without ads.

HarveyMushman I spend a lot of time on YT, being retired but I grew up in the day of Torrents. I built an enormous library of music and I mean thousands of albums/titles. There was no Spotify or music services so that artists were rewarded to worry about. Luckily, for every subscription service going there is a way around it. People have named the easiest ones where you install a browser extension. Long may they live!

Cuprajake I have Amazon Prime and my son lets me on his Spotify Family. All I am saying, is that DAveC and The Wired Gourmet both disliked monetising their YT accounts yet the latter is being forced into it. There is no benefit to him in this and the more that folks just accept the way it now is the worse it will get. Look at Google. It was a brilliant search engine 20 years ago but now? Do a search on Where do I buy a nuclear bomb and the sponsored hits tell you to buy one at a range of firms who pay to be at the top of the rankings. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page then you can switch thse sponsored ads off but only once. It is all wrong!

I’ve noticed recently a big rise in the frequency of ads on YouTube.

Their algorithms seem to be very broken.

Why do i get many adverts, advertising companies i have actually purchased from. Seems very counterintuitive . Surely they should be forcing me to buy from new (to me) companies.
