I think that I have already explained that I complete online surveys. and use the money to buy things I would not normally pay for out of expenditure so the cost is irrelevant. Obviously I want to spend as little money as possible. Starting off at £150, the cost of an OEM Eureka blow hopper I managed to get it down to £80 but that deal never happened. By further digging I have brought the cost down even further, bearing in mind it is not my money I am burning. I do not do surveys for the financial gain, I do them for a bit of fun, as you can see from the screenshot

Well, i ran the hopper out and then some more. Connected up the puffer which I must say is a very good fit with no air appearing to escape. Puffed it a few times and what is in the pf came out on the first puff followed by nothing! I did not measure it. Now, I accept that there might be a lot more stuff stuck inside, but my gut feeling is it is about correct

Wow. On the face of it that looks like quite a lot but if it’s all exchanged retention, shot after shot, I doubt it would make much difference at all. Unless, of course, it’s the first shot after a period of stagnation. Then a little purge might be in order but no more than a dozen beans or so.

memzey It all depends on how you look at it matey. I estimate there to be 1.5 gms and I have put 8 to 10 kilos through. If I had 2 hands I would have videod it but I ran it empty then all of that came out on the first puff. Absolutely nothing else followed. So, compared to an SD grinder like the Niche Zero I suppose it is enough to make SD boys take paracetemol and have sleepless nights but to us seasoned pro’s it is absolutely nothing! The best tasting grinder I ever had was a Compak K10 conical. It retained 20 to 25 gms so if I wanted to adjust the shot it was 2 shots further on before the difference was noticed…..thats retention!

dfk41 Interesting to hear that Compak K10 is the best tasting grinder you tried. And I guess there are no other machine (with less retentention) that is using that burr?

Fair point. “Quite a lot” will all depend on how your expectations are calibrated but, like I said, I doubt that much would make any difference, unless it was particularly stale that is.

When I’m using the same beans shot to shot I don’t really worry too much but I often go from one bean to another and then I appreciate very low retention.

Tjyven I remember they used a 68mm conical. I think they were in house but it is a long time ago. Mazzer do a 71mm conical in the Robur. Kafatek used to use them until they switched to their inferior inhouse Shuriken burrs. I will have to do some research but I am not aware of anything else using them. The taste was great but the retention was serious! Compak quickly upgraded the K10 to the E10 but it was completely different taste wise! They went to 83mm burrs from memory but they were not as good!

dfk41 Saw that Wega also have that 68mm burr but seems like Wega is just rebadged Compak so will have the same retention issues I guess.
