Lets kick off with some beautiful measuring equipment and it's even coffee related for some projects I'm doing. Micrometer (1 micron), depth gauge (1 micron) and calipers (10 micron). A pleasure to use, especially the callipers as my other set are Mitutoyo, but 60 years old (my dads) and in thou. LMSC I bought a ph meter to be more precise with my testing. Two bottles are for calibration at 7 & 4 ph. One bottle of probe cleaner and one solution to store the probe in so it does not dry out. You put enough in the bottom of the holder where there is some sponge and you put enough storage solution in so the sponge is wet. They were bought from a hydroponics store on line through Amazon.

Already had the adjustable pliers wrench so hopefully the jaw protectors will help avoid scratches when I have to lubricate the cam.

SMS78 I use this style of wrench. The amtech brand comes with jaw protectors for the wide mouth wrenches. Knipex is a good brand though, so that style should be OK as they look like they will lock in well and are not the water pump type of pliers they might seem at first glance. I should treat myself to a set.

Do like those knipex.. I was looking at the Rothenberger adjustable spanner’s with soft grip. Just wondering what size 8” or 6” both which open to 50mm.

The Knipex plier wrench are fantastic, much better than an adjustable spanner.

My Aergrind arrived, feels reassuringly heavy and well built. Sadly it was after my morning coffee so will probably have to wait until tomorrow for its first use.

It was a 2nd so discounted to £90 but I can only find one tiny mark just under the lid so I wouldn’t have complained paying full price for it

Just checked again and found that the 6” only open to 34mm and the 8” 38mm and the 10”50mm
Can anyone recommend which size would be best for working on the Vesuvius group head.

The nut that needs removed to access the cam is only around 27mm. The two large nuts on the group are around 37mm. I am vague with my measurements as the nuts are very heavily chromed so the edges and angles are all a bit rounded. I actually struggled with both Rothenberger and Am-tech adjustable wrench with their included soft jaws - they both slipped on the cam nut due to the rounding due to heavy chroming- I’ve not opened the others. I even filed the soft jaws to ensure they were flat and parallel and get a bit of grip but it didn’t help. I ended up removing them and stoning the jaws themselves to remove any sharp edges and burrs and used directly on the nut. It would be wise to use some tape probably but I’ve risked using without twice and the nut is unmarked.

I’d looked at the Knipex plier wrenches before and they look great but was put off by the price. Having reconsidered I now think they are worth the investment so placed an order yesterday. Think they were cheaper than when I last looked - £44 from Rapid via Amazon for the 86 03 350 which open up to 52mm.

The trick to using them is to open them slightly smaller than required, then push them onto the larger nut….this ensures they grip.

DavecUK Yeah, but I wasn’t confident that they wouldn’t slip off, smash into my lovely chrome machine machine and lead to damage. :-) The Rothenbeger soft jaws actually cracked the first time I used them and the Am-Tech soft jaws weren’t parallel and the wrench itself has a ton of backlash. Like you say - you can make them work but I don’t mind spending money on tools if I know they will be used regularly.

Gagaryn DavecUK Thanks for the feed back as I know what I need to do now. I have always bought good tools and they have served me well, other than losing them. There are quite a few machines with a screwdriver or spanner inside which is mine. However on this occasion I was put of by the price as another item to buy on top of everything else I have bought. Oh well I will just have to get the Visa card out again.
