I thought, it might be nice to have a discussion for those that want to, to pass comment on this momentous occasion. I remember only too well, the Silver Jubilee as I was working in a fish and chip shop on Whitley Bay seafront. I remember the street parties and the happy mood that abounded. Well done Ma’am!

Whether you are a royalist or not you can’t take away the fact that she has done a job for 70 years that if most of us were honest we wouldn’t want to do, especially into our 90’s.

She is mega rich in her own right and could do as her uncle did and say no thanks and live the life of riley…but she didn’t.

She has had to endure some of the same cr@p as any normal family (Charles & Diana, Andrew & Fergy and Andrew …again!) but all in the gaze and scrutiny of not just the British public, but the world, and she has done it with dignity.

Surely nobody with a heart can not have felt for her, seeing her sat alone at Philips funeral.

So, Hats off to her, I say.

I did…the sorrow to lose a partner you have spent so much of your life with is unimaginable.

I’m not getting political here at all, this next comment isn’t about politics, but about respect and behaviour. I read the basics in the quote below in many stories. Then I thought…how unfeeling and arrogant, that Boris himself didn’t send a personal apology to the queen before this crap. Downing street/it’s staff treated The Queen as some sort of department to be dealt with, rather than a person grieving! Something to do with the Civil service culture at the place (which is independent of political party), because in my day we didn’t allow drinking at work.

Number 10 has apologised to the Queen over two parties held in Downing Street on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral.The prime minister’s spokesperson said it was "deeply regrettable that this took place at a time of national mourning

She’s done a fantastic job (except with Andrew, perhaps).

I do think she should go down in history even more by, when she finally retires, abolishing the monarchy and being the last monarch of the UK ever.

70 years in the public eye and coming out the other end reasonably untarnished is a job well done in my book. But the world is a very different place now than it was at her coronation. It will be tougher for Charles and even tougher for those who follow him. I’m not sure hereditary monarchies have much of a future, some might say rightly. Certainly the rest of the Windsors haven’t managed to live under such scrutiny untarnished. As they strive to modernise themselves, living more “ordinary” lives the concept of hereditary monarchy will become increasing anachronistic. I often wonder how much of this led to her staying in the role for life and not ceding power earlier. She must know that what fondness remains for the Royal Family is focused on her and not the other numptys.

I can’t imagine the Monarchy will be abolished in my lifetime but I think its role will continue to be diminished, I can imagine more of the commonwealth countries disengaging in the not too distant future. All of this makes QE2s turn in the role all the more extraordinary.
