New grinder woes (Ceado e37sd)

Hi everyone

Im coming from a Baratza 270wi.

The Ceado is a few days old.

I’ve manually grinded about a kilogram (two pounds).

Half of which was old coffee and the other half fresh beans.

About 4 grams of coffee is retained.

It comes out it using the bellows and brush.

Seems like a lot?

Will this eventually stop?

No… and the E37S is not suitable for single dosing…funnily enough, it’s far bigger cousin the E92 could be successfully modified for single dosing..

It’s why a lot of people went down the Niche route. 4g purging of coffee every day for most people means the Niche is free after 5-7 years because of the saving in coffee. If it helps though, as long as you purge around 4-6g each time (unless you are doing multiple shots at once) and the grinder is a superb grinder when used as intended (with a hopper).

It’s the SD model. The e37sd not e37s.

SD stands for single dose.

hedonist222 - I’m not sure if there are many people experienced with this grinder on this forum to be honest. I’ve seen pictures/videos etc, and my understanding is that it requires bellows so the grinds can be pushed out - and therefore making it “Single Dosing” - rather than design a product from the ground up.

It if’s not clear, the bellows are meant to be used either as you grind or after you grind, and those grinds which are blown out should end up in your portafilter as part of the dose.

The bellows solution for single dosing is a really stupid idea! My take is, lets design a grinder……oh no, it retains 4 gms of coffee……solution, blow it out with bellows……..that is not a solution as you are still producing retained grinds and having to blow them out. Some folks would be happy with that solution. If it were me, and you are able to, I would return it to the retailer, get a refund and buy something that actually works as an single dose grinder
Sorry if that sounds negative. It is not meant to be and I am sure in all other aspects it is a great grinder

MediumRoastSteam I had one with a rubber flap that was not removable…if they changed to a metal flap system that is removable like the old E92, that’s also removable, then a bellows might work.

DavecUK If that’s their “Single Dose” model, out of the factory, I would assume they at least tested that the bellows do what they should do for that purpose? Or maybe they didn’t? That’s be really bad.

Did you also test their “SD” - Single dose model? I remember seeing your review of the E37S and the E92 side by side back in the day….

I’d say “tweaked” rather than “designed” :-)

I have used the Ceado grinders extensively at large coffee shops and echo what Dave says, superb for their original intended use with a hopper. As hopper fed on demand grinders go they are up there with the best. As a single dose it has been adapted and was clearly not originally designed with very low retention in mind let alone being zero from the ground up like the Niche.

If you are content to use the bellows and it does actually dislodge the coffee then no problem. The quality of the grind is hard to beat.
