hmmm … well you can compare of course but I guess what you are referring to in suggesting that it would be “hard” is that it’s not a like for like comparison because one is sprung and one is direct. If that’s the case then yes, I agree with you.

And it’s not just the sprung versus direct that makes a like for like comparison all but impossible. The Nurri has 54mm basket and I dose it with 22 grams of beans whereas the Strietman has a 49mm basket and I dose it with 15 grams.

Still, a comparison can be made, uneven though it may be. And it will be made!

      I had a Strietman up until a few days ago (sold it to help finance the purchase of the Nurri Leva). It makes delicious espresso. But in spite of my holding to what I felt was as consistent a brew process as i was capable, I could not get cup to cup consistency. Granted, I could have tried the Gabor pressure gauge to see if I could better control the pressure I was applying, but I just wasn’t oriented to change the esthetics of the Strietman by adding a gauge.

          I’m curious, why do you updose to 22 grams with the Nurri? I used 14 grams in my 58mm basket (Pro 800) and also with my Strietman. Extraction is 22 grams.

              I have a CT1 and love it.
              I also have a Caravel and the CT1 is similar but better.
              Modern, better engineering, more stable, it just works, every time.
              I will give you a comparison mid year when I get my Vostok but what I am expecting is more of the same but bigger.
              The CT1 is like camping with a really good swag.
              The Vostok is like towing a 30′ off road caravan complete with AC and generator.
              Do I need the Vostok, no.(don’t tell the Studmistress please)
              Do I want to experience it, yes.

                cyclezib Interesting. I went with the Evo for precisely the ‘opposite’ reason: it was a known quantity and I could see any issues were being addressed/resolved. The Nurri - which based on Tom’s experience would have come quite a few months later than my Evo did (ordered April 2022, delivered June) - is virtually undocumented/unknown as there are so few around, and the level of support is equally unknown.

                    No, that’s not actually true. Paolo was the creative force behind the Vostok and I helped with the Evo in terms of using pre existing tech and supplies he had to create it, and how that might be done.

                    I was responsible for the idea and some ways to create timed and pressure based group release, with pre infusion time and shot time when told about a simple shot timer Paolo planned for Vostok. This tech refined into reality by Paolo’s hard work and design skills, then demonstrated at Trieste.

                    The one toy Paolo has, is his own manufacturing factory, not just an assembly plant. Hence the creation of many new concepts, because he can actually make parts and boards as well as design the entire machine in solidworks.

                        cyclezib depends on the basket size, pure and simple. Some are made for 7g or 15g or 18g etc.

                        I’m not one for over stuffing a basket but putting say 18g in the Nurri basket is under dosing by a long way.

                            DavecUK Dave, I am not trying to second guess you since you obviously have a lot of personal knowledge of how acs originated those machines, but I need to clear up something I don’t understand. If nurri wasn’t involved at all in the creation of the vostok, then why is he listed as the inventor of what was called in this thread as the vostok patent application, based on posts #119 & 120 of this thread? Inventors of patented inventions have a legally recognised moral right to be acknowledged as having substantially contributed to the creation of that invention, and so if he did not have any input into the vostok, then he wouldn’t be listed as the inventor…

                              I have received my nurri leva and have been learning how to use it as there’s a learning curve for me on how to adjust the temperature of the grouphead to fit different roasts depending on how light or dark they are - a process I have been enjoying ! Its still early days for me but so far I have been finding it to make very drinkable even shots that are clearly at too high temperature for the beans concerned or even where I botched up the puck preparation. When I have gotten the temp right and done even a passable job at the wdt tool and tamping, it has given really great shots so far. Steaming is so much easier than the izzo which produced so much power in the steam it ws always hard for me to control it.

                              I cannot also fail to mention how pleasing to the eye the machine is also - unlike my izzo which I have to admit looked like a massive block of stainless steel that dwarfed everything else in my rather small kitchen, the nurri tends to make my kitchen look better (partly by drawing the eye to itself rather than to the rest of the kitchen!). I have the same white with zebrano look that Tom and viernes have with their machines and it looks almost like it is crouching on my counter top like a bird of prey with its zebrano wings folded back!

                              Interestingly the sloping nature of the machine makes it look smaller to my eye than it actually is, but of course for me I had gotten used to seeing the izzo there, so virtually any machine other thna the izzo would look smaller….

                              I haven’t tried to put more than 18g in all the time that I owned my izzo and even now with the nurri. Did you find that 22g still gave sufficient clearance between the filter screen and the top of the puck?

                                  The level of support for the nurri would be dealt with by the appointed distributor in your country if you were to buy it from them, so you would always have someone in your country to support, maintain and fix the machine if there is any issue cropping up with the nurri.

                                      chlorox yes i think 22g is about right, assuming we are using the same basket (probably) and assuming that we are both using medium-ish roast beans. The Nurri has been idle while I have been waiting for my beans to degras a bit more but I’ll pay closer attention this weekend and try to remember to post again here.

                                      The 5 cent test is a pretty reliable indicator of whether the puck is high enough in the basket. You place a 5 cent coin on top of the puck and insert the portafiliter into the group heard, lock it in gently and then remove. If the coin makes an indent in the puck then it’s about right. If there is no indent then the gap between puck and shower screen is too great.

                                          tompoland are you using the stock basket that came with rhe nurri and the naked portafilter that came with it? I may try that experiment then, thanks…

                                              chlorox In the UK there is no appointed distributor… and to be honest I’m less worried about ‘retailer-provided’ support than I am about community-provided knowledge/support.

                                              I know of exactly 3 people who have a Nurri (all on this forum!). I know of at least 20 Evo owners - purely because the machine has been around longer, and the situation was even worse 8-9 months ago when I was deciding between them. Hopefully, now that production and delivery seem to have moved from ‘single prototype’ to ‘factory’, there will be a ‘Nurri’ community forming. I just felt the risk was too big for me, particularly as it would have been the first lever and the first ‘proper’ coffee machine I owned.

                                                  chlorox yes indeed, stock basket. I have the same size in an IMS basket which is rate 19-22g. Somi suspect 22g is about right.
