For this machine it's one of the first made, and I am doing an Engineering review on it for Antonio (the creator) as a favour, so I can't really comment at this stage. But I can post photos….and say that the Paddle levers on this are very basic beta ones….so that area is still in the design melting pot.

I love the look of these sorts of lever machines, but they really need to at least try to make them a bit more compact in design. They're either lacking in that area of expertise or they don't care… A more compact design would look like a much better centre piece in a kitchen (and take less space in a commercial setting), rather than protruding till the near edge. The size distracts from the elegance of it.

@"Sham"#p10001 I agree when it comes to similar sized Levers that require external plumbing or flojet type arrangement. But the Nurri is dual boiler and plumbing is optional. Still, I agree that it's a lot for a normal kitchen. I like the footprint on the Decent for example.

@"tompoland"#p10007 In that case they should have either decreased tank sizes and utilised quicker water heating technology (I'm sure there's loads of options from other industry's) or started with a more wide design but I guess that would've cost too much R&D time. One way to think of it is that they won't lose customers if its small, but they will lose customers if its too big. It does look pretty nice though.

With the paddle to stop the shot will you have to back flush as there is reverse pressure?

Were a normal lever everything comes down the group?

Cuprajake My understanding is that there is some valve that does the flushing - not through back-pressure (i.e. the pump running again), but Nurri are being fairly scant on details. I think it simply opens a port in the brewing chamber and lets any pressurised water out in the drip tray.

If both paddles are pressed, the pump runs (right paddle) and the flush valve is open (left paddle), which results in clean water entering and quickly exiting the chamber (especially if a blind filter is fitted); depending on where the inlet/outlet holes are, this may be very effective at ‘cleaning up’… or not. Once again, not much detail supplied by Nurri.

Cuprajake I see no brown/dirty water coming out the drain valve. The water comes clean with no residues.

So if the question is, are you forced to make backflushes because it dirties the group due to the vent pressure feature?

IMO, the answer is no. I see clear water as I said. And I know Nurri did some testing about this.

I think this is because when you open the vent valve, there’s no negative pressure at the shower screen that may suck up the coffee. In fact, I would say there’s positive pressure in the shower and positive pressure at the drain circuit, thus it drains the water.

CoyoteOldMan I’m looking for a lever machine as well. In terms of aesthetics and functional considerations, I’m right with you on those three machines. Unfortunately the footprints of the Vesuvius evo and Nurri are way too big for my kitchen. I may even be moving house in the medium term which would compound the size problem. So for now I’m just hoping the Argos materialises…

You can put a blind filter, fill the chamber, create pressure, and then vent pressure with the paddle.
Or you can put a blind filter and press both paddles at the same time.

CoyoteOldMan there is enough substance in the form of Ross’s (creator) participation in the Discord forum, videos of the machine and the assembly warehouse, detailed and regular email updates as well as emails to and from Ross personally, to give me confidence in his ability to deliver a machine as promised. The design is game changing (option of direct vs spring) so crossing fingers that the build quality and espresso in the cup will be commesurately impressive.

tompoland Definitely game changing, if I understand the design correctly. All one needs to do is to remove the spring and turn the lever base by half a turn - that is very very neat. I’d be a little worried about such a narrow machine with a long lever not being tremendously stable, but that’s one easy fix…

In fact the detailed updates are quite reminiscent of the Kopi Deva campaign which has started shipping. Another one which I haven’t quite pulled the trigger on…

hthec It is a fairly “essential” machine. Single boiler, 1 PID, a lever and a grouphead. Definitely not much that can go wrong.

My guess - based on info available and not much experience with coffee machines, so take it with a BIG pinch of salt - is that the ‘risk’ is the extent to which the thermal stability/mass of the group allows multiple shots, and whether the proposed use of “brew first, then raise temperature to steam” is actually feasible - neither of which may not be an issue for you. Nothing to do with ‘reliability’ as such.

This point did make me hesitate initially. But I’ve seen PID-modded Europiccolas that do exactly this so it doesn’t seem too unlikely for the Argos to deliver.

What do people think of durability of AISI 430 vs. 316 for machine bodies? That is one of the concerns that holds me back from the Nurri… probably unnecessarily.

316L is the grade commonly used for boilers, as it has the right anti-corrosive properties and is the ideal steel. 304 steel is anti-corrosive, not as much as 316L (apart from sulphuric acid), but is better for machine bodies as it has a higher tensile and yield strength, compared to 316 which wouldn’t be a good choice for a machines body..

430 is a cheaper version of 304 and not quite as corrosion resistant. Ideal uses of the different steels are shown below. The first to make a highly durable expensive case and machine, the second to make a case for a machine with good durability, but lower cost.

The Vesuvius for example is a 304 body and frame with 316L boilers
The Minima is 430 grade body and 316L boilers.

Thanks @DavecUK - so basically the key reason for the Nurri’s body to be in 430 rather than in 304 (apologies; I thought the Vesuvius/Evo’s body were in 316) is cost control, to the potential expense of durability/corrosion resistance.

The lower resistance to tensile stresses I would assume is not a concern at all, considering the forces on a coffee machine case don’t get anywhere near fabrication levels.

I still have a very 1st world problem… Nurri or ACS…

Got a price quote from ACS, and once VAT is factored in (and assuming I can get the “pre-order” price on the Nurri - 1 machine left) they cost pretty much the same (within £100 of one another).

For the ACS: somewhat better materials, 3 independent PID controls, known build quality/components, quick delivery, nearly 1 year on the market, so many teething troubles sorted out. “More of a known unknown”.

For the Nurri: nicer aesthetics, extra functionality with paddles, broader range of pressure on pump, sale through UK retailer meaning easier support/warranty

From the little I can see/hear, both produce excellent coffee, are relatively forgiving of inexperienced users and will steam well (big cappuccino family here…).

What would you do?
