Softened water

As part of my ongoing attempt to solve the hardness of my water for coffee, but also generally for the house, and my wife’s tea drinking, I am considering a whole house softening system.

Would it be possible to then remineralise the softened water (ie use a tap that is softened and not the kitchen tap) for use in a double boiler machine or is it better to have that for the house, but still have another solution for coffee that would use the unsoftened kitchen tap, ie zero jug, distilling etc.

@DavecUK do we need a water tag / area? It would make it easier to find all water related posts as it seems a lot of people, me definitely included, find this harder than how to use machines.

LMSC Thanks. is the RO machine on the output of the softener or direct to tap water? I have separate feed to kitchen that would probably not be on the softener that I could get RO on.

Quick question: what’s the softener you’re using and isn’t the output very salty? I’ve been mulling over this for a while as I’d like to solve the scale issues in the bathrooms but avoid salty water for cleaning teeth etc. I’ve been reading up for a while but have yet to find a system to suit. Please share!

simonc As indicated, RO is soft water fed. It is Osmio Zero. The softened water works very well.

Our unit turned to change filter after 13 months. It still reads 58 TDS, KH is 31.25 mg/l and GH is 13.43. We can in fact, sanitise and reuse the same filters after resetting it. But, we will change it as it’s been more than a year since new.

Some OZ users may have sanitised and reset with the same filter. It’s a personal choice. When the change filter sign did not pop up on its anniversary date in middle of last month, we have been thinking of changing it since then.

We would change it once a year for reasons of hygiene. It doesn’t cost much — £57 for a set — considering the heavy use at home and the frequency.

We have to remember, we feed the machine with a softened water.

BaggaZee Twintec. The guys who have been doing this as a family business said it’s fine to drink. We drank from kitchen tap thinking it’s hard. It was softened. My vitals, touch wood, are doctors dream. Life style, food and drinking habits would not put me on the riskier category. Yet, the GP found me borderline cholesterol. I just weigh in 60s. He was shocked. He gave me 6 months to get in shape. I did. My wife always had constant stomach troubles. We installed osmio zero. In 2 months, our problems disappeared.

The softened water is great for the whole house. I don’t think it would would harm your teeths and gums. Corsodyl daily range is a bit salty - has bicarb.
