Love my Niche but looking at getting a flat burr grinder to complement it. Besides the Lagom P64 can anybody recommend another flat burr grinder in that price range or less? To be uesed for single dosing.

Currently have a df64 but stock is okish not worth it over a niche. Once modded though (especially the declumber mod) and aligned properly it becomes a very good sidegrade from the niche to try flats. It has its shortcomings but very liveable I would say. Otherwise the only other good option is the kopiconcepts deva grinder. I left out the new eureka grinder cause reviews and overall construction leaves much to be desired. King of the hill at the moment is the lagom p64 since it has perfect alignment.

@"DavecUK"#p11958 Df64 fully aligned (Dial Gauge) with SSP HU and p64 stock SSP HU. The df64 cannot grind fine enough to create enough puck resistance and most you get decent turbo shots. Carrier concentricty and general alignment is seriously needed at that level. Stock burrs are extremely decent and will be fine for most consumers but SSP hu 64mm is my main focus. The flavor profile is basically the perfect balance between conicals and flats. The current avaliable grinder with perfect alignment out of the box is the p64. The kopi deva has a nice malleable piece of copper that deforms during alignment so hoping it will solve this dilemma.

kopi deva looks nice tbf, ive seen a few vids on it, be nice to see how it grinds if you have the space there is a bargin of a mazzer major on ebay £400 5 months old, theres alot of 83mm flats for sale atm

Well my Mazzer Major has arrived. First impressions are:

It is built like a tank! If this lands on your foot it is a quick trip to A&E.
It makes the Niche looks like a kid’s toy lol.
A quick test and the grinds are great. Requires very little use of the WDT. Pulled a shot and although the grind was not fine enough it still tasted good.

I do have a few questions as realistically I want to turn this into a single dose grinder. Sorry if some of the questions are obvious.

The machine only grinds if you have the hopper on. How does it grind without the hopper on? Does something need to be attached?
To make it single dose I am assuming the front section needs to come off and get replaced by the funnel that Cuprajake mentioned. To attach the funnel will it require you to create holes on the machine for screws etc?
Is there any electrical work required at all to mod it? I’m very basic when it comes to DIY. How difficult would the job be if electrical work is required?

I think those are all the questions for now. I think this will be a neat little project during my annual leave coming up in late April.

You need to change wiring in the bottom the hopper presses in a safety switch.

The fron comes off the funnel firs in the top screws there there. A front plate needs buying £20 from espresso parts thats what needs tapping and screwing

I think to design something as noisy as the Sette, took a special skill…especially to get the screeching at just the right pitch to be extra annoying.

The two biggest surprises for me were:

How could a company of that size make such unreliable products, and worse still keep making them the same way, even after they were known to be so unreliable.
Why would people buy them and owners recommend them to others?

I actually think it’s a disgrace and shows total contempt for the customer…..

Otaibimn a reseller in my country offers DF64 with alignment service at a small fee. Would you consider that a decent upgrade from my 50mm mignon silenzio? Or would I be better off upgrading my eureka stock burrs…

Well lesson learnt to check dimensions - I ordered the Daniel Wong kit for the Mazzer Major and the back panel does not sit flush and appears to be far too long to fit. Unless I’m being thick and doing something completely wrong it looks like this is not compatible with my version.

That plate looks like it might be for the Mazzer Robur/Royal and not the Major. They’re about 4” taller than the Major.

Perhaps they’ve sent the wrong kit by mistake? Hopefully it’s resolved easily.

Nowhere near as pretty, but on way smaller budget. Have finally received and modded my AliExpress funnel today and it’s good.

Getting (exchange?) retention of about .020gm on an 8 GM dose with a couple/three puffs of the Rocket blower. Very nice output too, fluffy and no clumping.

Now for some nice wooden lids…

Just a bit of tidying up and make a neoprene gasket for behind the funnel..bit of cereal packet at moment.

CafeNoir Nice! I am just curious, do you get good results with the rocket pump? I tried one and all it did was throw the grounds in the air and from there in my lungs rather than doing any useful work. I switched to one of these and finally got good results

I got a response from Daniel. It’s actually my fault as he does say on his website to check the dimensions. He advised the Mazzer Major I have is the latest one and the dimensions are quite different so the back plate he sent is for older models. However, he will make me a custom back plate and send it on me for free. That is great service.
